TechSmith Relay (Self-Hosted): Encountering a Server Error in /Relay when Accessing the Website

Server Error in /Relay and ASP Errors cause the server to go offline repeatedly.

When attempting to access the Camtasia Relay website, an error may be displayed in the browser.  The error may read:

Server Error in '/Relay' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated.

Additionally, the servers Application event logs may contain numerous Warnings that indicate that the AppDomain is unloaded.

This problem is caused by a known issue in earlier versions of Camtasia Relay that can result in the server entering this failure state.

Restarting the Relay Manager Service from the Services console of the computer will allow the Relay Service to come back online for a short time and then the failure may occur again.   To resolve this, ensure that the latest Camtasia Relay Server ( and later) package available for download from the TechSmith Downloads page has been installed.  The updated installation can be obtained at:

1. If the server is running an earlier version of Camtasia Relay 4.3.1.xxxx, the existing server installation must be removed using the Programs and Features menu, before installing the later package.   Note:  Removing the server software installation does not result in the Camtasia Relay Database being removed. All users, presentation history, and custom profiles will be saved.

2. Removing the server software is not necessary for servers running a prior version (4.3.0.xxxx) and earlier.  These servers can be directly updated to the current release.
