Camtasia (Windows): Schedule a recording to automatically start and stop

This article explains how to create two special files, and reference them using the Windows Task Scheduler to automatically initiate a Camtasia Studio Screen recording.

You must have Administrator level access to the computer. These instructions assume you installed Camtasia Studio 7 into the default directory path. The example in this document uses the Windows 7 Task Scheduler. Process may vary slightly if using XP or Vista.

Common use cases

  • Record a webinar on your home computer while you are at work
  • Ensure a class lecture is recorded and not forgotten
  • Assist the recording of an event for someone not familiar using Camtasia Studio

To Schedule an Automated Recording

Part 1: Create the files that are used to start and stop the recording

  1. Create a new document in Notepad.
  2. Copy and paste the following line of text into the document as shown below.

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio 7\CamRecorder.exe" /record

Note: On a 32-bit computer, leave out the (x86) part of the file path: "C:\Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio 7\CamRecorder.exe" /record

  3.  Save the Notepad document as record.bat. Important: Save the file where it won't be moved, and be sure to use the .bat extension. (Saving as a .txt will NOT work.) This file will be used to initiate the recording in a later step.
  4. Create another new file in Notepad. This file will be used to stop the recording.
  5. Copy and paste the following line of text into the document as shown below.

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio 7\CamRecorder.exe" /stop

(On a 32-bit computer, leave out the (x86) part of the file path)

  6. Save the file as stop.bat. Remember where you saved record.bat and stop.bat.

Part 2: Setup options in Camtasia Recorder

  1. In Camtasia Recorder (not Camtasia Studio), click Tools Options.
  2. In General (tab) click File Options, and enable Automatic file name.
