Camtasia (Windows): Video Not Playing on iPhone/iPad

Problem

Currently, iOS devices only support MP4 videos encoded with the H.264 Baseline Profile of Levels up to 3.1.  Videos encoded with Baseline 4 or higher will not work on iOS devices like the iPad or iPhone. These videos may either attempt to load and never succeed, or may have a broken play button as shown below when viewing on an iOS device.

Solution

If you notice this behavior when trying to view videos produced from Camtasia Studio 8 on you iOS device, please try the following. 

Sharing to your own web server

  1. Open the project in Camtasia Studio
  2. Click Produce and Share, and choose Custom Production Settings

  3. Choose MP4 - Smart Player (Flash /HTML 5)
  4. Click on Video Settings and change the H.264 profile to Baseline, and the H.264 level to 3.1

  5. Finish producing your video.  The new video should work on your iOS device. 

Sharing to Screencast.com

  1. Open the project in Camtasia Studio
  2. Click Produce and Share and choose Screencast.com
  3. After signing in, click on the Options button > Video settings tab and change the H.264 profile to Baseline, and the H.264 level to 3.1

  4. Select OK and then finish the production to Screencast.com.  The new video should work on your iOS device.
