Snagit (Windows): Fatal Error when installing

Problem

There is an occasional incompatibility with our installer and how Windows attempts to use it.  To resolve this issue please try one of the following methods listed below.

Solution

Both of these fixes require the using the Run window.  To open a run window on Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10, hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and hit the R key.

Method 1: Install using Passive Mode

  • From the Run or command line, you can browse to find your SnagIt folder and find the EXE or MSI file within the folder.
  • Double-click on this file and it will add the installation file the command line.
  • Then  type /passive after whatever it fills in.
  • Examples: SnagIt.exe /passive or Camtasia.msi /passive

Method  2: Register the Visual Basic Script runtime

On x86 (32-bit Windows):
From a command line:

regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll

On x64 (64 bit Windows):
From a command line:

regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\syswow64\vbscript.dll

If done correctly, a message should appear saying that the registration of the DLL succeeded.  The User Account Control (UAC) may need to be turned off to register these correctly, so if it hangs or does not work, try to disable UAC and then do it again.

To disable the UAC go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off and make sure that the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" option is unchecked and press OK.

Note:This is only a fix for the Vista, 7, 8, and 10 operating systems.  If experiencing fatal installation errors on older operating systems, please view this article.
