Snagit (Windows): Text Capture Known Issues and Best Practices

I received an error message, unexpected output, or undesirable output when using Grab Text or Edit Text in Snagit 2018.

Grab Text is available in Snagit 2018 and later. See this article for more information.

Snagit utilizes the ABBYY OCR Engine to recognize and capture text. This article provides some known issues and best practices for using OCR in Snagit.

How does Snagit determine which font to use?

The ABBYY OCR engine detects the font family used and selects a common font in the same family for the text replacement. For example, if the font detected is a Monospace font, then the engine replaces the font with Courier New. The table below lists the font families and the replacement font in Snagit.

Font Family Font Font Used in Snagit
Monospace Monaco Courier New
Serif Century Schoolbook Times New Roman
Sans Serif Helvectia Arial

Slanted or angled text may not be recognized.

The OCR library does not recognize slanted text. As a workaround, try rotating the image and then capture again.

The more contrast, the better.

The OCR engine may not detect light-colored text on a light-colored background. For best results, select content with a high contrast between the text and the background color.

Good Bad
Light text, dark background Light text, light background
Dark text, light background Dark text, dark background

The first OCR function takes a long time.

The first time using Grab Text or Edit Text will take longer to process than subsequent captures. After the first OCR function in Snagit, it should perform normally.

Make sure the font is large enough.

If a font is too small, Snagit may not be able to detect that the text exists. As a general rule of thumb, if the font is readable on the screen, Snagit should be able to capture it.

Grab text on large captures may take a long time.

When using Grab Text on a very large capture, such as a scrolling capture or panoramic capture, Snagit may take a long time to process the capture. We do not recommend using Grab Text or Edit Text on very large captures. Instead, use the Selection tool to select a smaller portion of the capture to work with.

Snagit may not detect text inside a bounding box.

The OCR engine may not detect text located inside a bounding box. As a workaround, use the Selection tool to select the text within the bounding box, and then choose Edit Text or Grab Text.

Snagit may not detect some font and characters.

Fonts with the following properties may have unexpected results:

  • Glyph or symbol based fonts
  • Fonts with accents
  • Handwritten or cursive font
  • Outlined or shadowed text may have problems capturing. The text may either be inaccurate or not recognized at all.
