Snagit (Windows): Capture Fails or Does Not Appear in Snagit Editor

Problem

After taking a capture, why did Snagit fail or show a blank image in Snagit Editor?

Solution

Snagit may not have the ability or permission to write to the DataStore.

Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7

  1. Exit Snagit. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager to confirm the following processes are not running:
  • Snagit32.exe
  • SnagitEditor.exe
  • SnagPriv.exe

    For Windows 10 and Windows 8, you may need to select More Details in the Task Manager.

  • Press Windows key + R or right-click Start in the taskbar and select Run.
  • Type the following and press Enter:
    • Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista: %LocalAppData%\TechSmith\Snagit\
    • Windows XP: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\TechSmith\Snagit
  • File Explorer opens. The DataStore folder contains your old Snagit captures. To create a backup, copy and paste the DataStore folder to a safe location.
  • Delete the DataStore folder in the Snagit folder.
  • Open Snagit.
  • Snagit creates a new DataStore folder to store your future captures.

    To add your old captures to the Library, double-click the SNAG files in the backup Datastore folder.
