This issue can be caused by a few different items.
An incomplete or corrupt .NET Framework 3.5 installation may cause Jing to crash when trying to open. To fix this issue please follow these steps:
- Close and then uninstall Jing. Then reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 from this location: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
- Download the latest installer for Jing using this link: Download Jing
- Once downloaded, reinstall Jing. You may be asked to Sign In with your Screencast.com account.
Jing uses an XML file to store settings information, this file may have become corrupted. To fix this issue please follow these steps:
- Enable Hidden Folders on your version of Windows:
For Windows XP: Show Hidden Program or System Files
For Windows Vista / 7: Show Hidden Files
- Exit Jing, and navigate to this location:
Windows XP: C:\ Documents and Settings \ "Your User Name" \ Local Settings \ Application Data \ TechSmith \ Jing
Windows Vista / 7: C:\ Users \ "Your User Name" \ AppData \ Local \ TechSmith \ Jing
- Here you will need to rename the Settings.xml file to Settings_Old.xml. Then open Jing, where you will be asked to Sign In or Sign Up, please choose Sign In and enter your login information.
We find that most users are able to get past a crash on startup by using the above two methods however, items listed below have also been attributed to causing Jing to crash when opening:
- Disconnect all external devices including any webcams, microphones, audio devices, etc. and then test Jing again.
- Hibernation mode on a computer. Turn this off to see if the crashing or hanging stops.
- Bad or outdated video card drivers. Please update your video card driver from the card manufactureror PC manufacturer's website.
- Multiple monitors connected via USB connection. Try unplugging the USB monitor and then launchingJing again. USB monitor devices are not supported.
- Security software or network security. We have seen this specific to the Kaspersky security suite. If you are running Kaspersky you will need to add Jing.exe as an exception to this software. Please see this article for the settings to check: Jing will not login to Screencast.com
- Check for bad fonts per this article: Jing crashes when changing fonts
- The ATI Catalyst software can cause Jing to crash. Close this software and then try Jing again.
- Microsoft's IntelliPoint and IntelliType software can cause a crash within Jing. Disable these and then try Jing again.
