Camera/Microphone Not Working on Windows 10 Using Camtasia

Problem

Windows 10 (Build 1803) and later introduce new privacy settings that may prevent applications from accessing the microphone and web camera. If a device is denied access, one of these errors may occur:

  • When trying to record the screen and a microphone, Camtasia displays an error:

  • Unable to enable the web camera in the Camtasia Recorder.

  • When trying to record the webcam Camtasia displays an error:
    You must allow Camtasia Recorder access to use your camera. Select Windows Settings > Privacy > Camera to grant access.

  • When recording Voice Narration, the recording at the end displays an error and the file is lost:

Solution

Make sure that the Windows privacy settings are set to allow Camtasia to access the microphone and web camera by following the steps below.

Allow Access to the Microphone

  1. Click Start > Settings.

  2. Click Privacy.

  3. Click Microphone from the list on the left.
  4. Set Microphone access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your microphone to On.

Allow Access to the Camera

  1. Click Start > Settings.

  2. Click Privacy.

  3. Click Camera from the list on the left.
  4. Set Camera access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your Camera to On.

  5. Scroll down a little and also allow desktop apps to access your Camera as well
