Problem
Windows 10 (Build 1803) and later introduce new privacy settings that may prevent applications from accessing the microphone and web camera. If a device is denied access, one of these errors may occur:
- When trying to record the screen and a microphone, Camtasia displays an error:
- Unable to enable the web camera in the Camtasia Recorder.

When trying to record the webcam Camtasia displays an error:
You must allow Camtasia Recorder access to use your camera. Select Windows Settings > Privacy > Camera to grant access. - When recording Voice Narration, the recording at the end displays an error and the file is lost:
Solution
Make sure that the Windows privacy settings are set to allow Camtasia to access the microphone and web camera by following the steps below.
Allow Access to the Microphone
- Click Start > Settings.
- Click Privacy.
- Click Microphone from the list on the left.
- Set Microphone access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your microphone to On.
Allow Access to the Camera
- Click Start > Settings.
- Click Privacy.
- Click Camera from the list on the left.
- Set Camera access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your Camera to On.
- Scroll down a little and also allow desktop apps to access your Camera as well
