Camtasia (Windows): Camera/Microphone Not Working on Windows 10

Problem

Windows 10 1803 (April 2018) and later introduce new privacy settings that may prevent applications from accessing the microphone and web camera. If a device is denied access, one of these error's may occur.

  • When trying to record the screen and a microphone, Camtasia displays an error: "A problem with your audio device will not allow the recording to start."

  • Unable to enable the web camera in the Camtasia Recorder.

  • When recording Voice Narration, at the end of the recording an error is displayed and the recording is lost: "No audio recorded."

Solution

Make sure that the Windows privacy settings are set to allow Camtasia to access the microphone and the web camera with the steps below.

Allow Access to the Microphone

  1. Click Start > Settings.

  2. Click Privacy.

  3. Click Microphone from the list on the left.
  4. Make sure that Microphone access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your microphone is set to On.

Allow Access to the Camera

  1. Click Start > Settings.

  3. Click Camera from the list on the left.
  4. Make sure that Camera access for this device is on and Allow apps to access your camera is set to On.
