Record Video with TechSmith Capture

Quickly record anything on your screen or webcam with TechSmith Capture.

Record a Video

  1. Sign into Screencast. Click the Launch Recorder button.
  2. The launch website opens. If a prompt appears, allow your computer to open the application. If you are unable to launch TechSmith Capture, click the Download and Install link.

  3. The Capture dialog appears. Select your recording settings:
    • Screen area selection: Select Fullscreen to record your entire screen or select Region to record a portion of your screen.
    • Microphone Audio: Select an audio recording device from the Record microphone dropdown.
    • Webcam: Record live video from the connected or built-in webcam. Click the link to select the connected camera device. Screen video is not recorded when the webcam option is enabled.
    • System Audio: Record the sound from your computer such as application alerts or the audio playing from your computer speakers.
    • Record Cursor: Record the cursor to help show where the action occurs on the screen.


    Record a 10-15 second test recording to check to make sure your audio and video devices are set up properly.

  4. Click the Capture button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Command+Shift+1 (Mac).
  5. If you selected Region, click and drag crosshairs to select the area to record.
  6. The image or video toolbar appears. Click the Video Capture button.
  7. The video recording toolbar appears. Editable recording settings include:
    • Select a different connected webcam or microphone from the dropdown. Or click the Webcam button or Microphone button to turn off these options.
    • To adjust the size of the selection, drag the handles or type custom dimensions in pixels into the Width and Height fields.

    • To move the selected area on the screen, click and drag the selection to the desired location.

  8. To start the video recording, click the Record button. If recording the entire screen, a smaller toolbar appears.
  9. If previously enabled, click the Webcam button during recording to switch between screen and camera.
  10. To pause recording, click the Pause button.
  11. To stop the recording, click the Stop button.
  12. To restart the recording, click the Start Over button. If you select this option during or after recording, the recording is permanently deleted.
  13. To cancel the recording, click the Cancel button. If you select this option during or after recording, the recording is permanently deleted.
  14. The Preview dialog appears. Click the Upload button to upload your content to Screencast.


Tip for Windows Users

For quick access, you can add TechSmith Capture to your taskbar. Click the Windows Start button and browse to TechSmith Capture in Apps. Right-click the TechSmith Capture option and select More > Pin to taskbar.
