Jing Alternatives: What Should I Install When Jing Retires in 2020?
History of Jing
For the past 11 years we have provided Jing for free. Our customers have found significant value from Jing, based on the high number of downloads and positive ratings. With Adobe’s upcoming retirement of Flash (planned December 2020), Jing’s current video format (.swf) will no longer be supported by web browsers. As a result, we have received many questions about the future of Jing.
Plan for Jing Moving Forward
We have decided to end development on Jing, and to build a replacement tool. We remain committed to offering a free solution because we are passionate about making it easy for anyone to capture and share knowledge visually. But, we feel that the best long-term approach to achieving our mission with a free offering is to build a new product from the ground up. The new recorder will be available in the Screencast and TechSmith Relay sites. The recorded videos will be stored in Screencast (Free or Pro) or TechSmith Relay. This new screen recorder is planned to have many advantages over Jing video including the following.
Modern MP4 video format
Recording computer audio
What to Expect
The new replacement tool will be rolled out in phases.
To address Adobe retiring Flash (SWF files) in December 2020, the first phase will provide a new recorder to produce MP4 video files.
This new feature inside Screencast will replace our current Jing offering as our new free, modernized screen capture and recording tool.
Future phases of this new offering will include functionality around image capture and annotation which is scheduled to be completed in early 2020.
Information will also be communicated to Jing users via the email address they used when setting up their TechSmith account throughout the remainder of the year. Additional information and progress will also be posted on the Jing user forum throughout the year.
