Store tags in metadata of files
I believe that it would be a good idea to store tags in the metadata of files. Or at least read them from the metadata when available. That makes the use of tags possible in other applications (e.g., file explorer) and it is easier to transfer tags when files are moved or added.

Snagit does store tags in .snagx and .MP4 files. If you have some tags set, with File Explorer currently viewing your Snagit Library folder, you can search on a tag like this: "tags: ProjectGreen". The same search can be accomplished using Snagit Editor's Library view by selecting the tag from the Tags list.

Hello Bill,
Thanks for the explanation. I see that this is correct. I also use Snagit to edit other file types, and now I noticed that it is impossible to assign tags to these files (non snagx). To be honest, I do not use the folder where the library is stored. But I do use other folders with files and edit them using Snagit.
I understand now that I misunderstood the functionality of the library. Just to be sure:
1) It seems that only snagx and MP4 files are stored in the library (.../Documents/Snagit). Snagx files stored elsewhere are not visible in the library.
→ This seems important because snagx files stored elsewhere can disappear eventually from the recent list and cannot be organized/filtered using tags.
2) Tags are only possible with snagx/mp4 files, regardless of where they are stored. Is this correct? Thanks for helping me understand this difference in handling files. It would be great though to incorporate JPG and PNG in the library as well (with tags). And make the library more extensive in the sense that also files that are stored elsewhere can be easily managed within the library itself.
Thanks.

You're right:
- The Library is designed to store and show just snagx and MP4 files, but other files can be in the Library directory.
- Snagx files not in the Library directory and currently in the Tray may age out of the Tray. The Library will not show them.
- Snagit only supports tagging snagx and MP4 files.
We have been considering showing JPG/PNG image files in the Library view that reside in the Library directory. This is a bit counter to the intended workflow where the user keeps snagx files around because they support undo/redo and annotations can be removed to access the original image whereas annotations to JPG/PNG files are permanent. A analogy would be Microsoft Word .docx files that allow one to continually make changes, but they would be shared to others as .pdf files (because others may not have Word or it is not desired to distribute the original .docx files).

Hello Bill,
Thanks for explaining the functionality to me—I now have a much better understanding of how it works.
As we discussed, some files might be stored in the library, but all files are ultimately stored in File Explorer. From a workflow perspective, I think it's easier to use File Explorer (perhaps in combination with Listary) as my main "library" because I don't have to guess or remember the best way to find and open a file.
I also found it useful to add tags to files in the recent tray of Snagit Editor. This is because using another option to tag files can be a bit cumbersome. I'll continue to use this feature unless I find a more practical way to tag all of my files.
Thanks again for your help. I appreciate your time and patience.
