I absolutely hate how this Windows 11 update took it upon itself to automatically switch my existing snagit preference with its own crappy snipping tool.

For my setup at least, none of the steps above worked and have now reached out to Techsmith support for help.

    Version 2023.11 (64bit) Build 27519

For anyone else having this issue, this seems (so far) to have worked for me - go into:

Snagit Capture Preferences (not Snagit Editor Preferences)

Then clicking on the Hotkeys Tab, and selecting the "Allow Snagit to override other hotkey assignments" check box on the bottom of that tab.

Reinstallation, etc., is not necessary. Just 2 checks. Per Daniel, check that the override is on. 2nd, and this is important...

    Press Winkey

Go into settings, accessibility, and scroll down to the "Interaction" section and select "Keyboard".

"Use the Print Screen key to open Snipping Tool" - Toggle this slider to Off.

Neil - Thank you so much for the Accessibility setting tip! That was the missing bit for me. I'm not quite sure why, but I needed to restart my system before the Print Screen key was calling up SnagIt again. This was with 2022.1.4.

On another system with 2023.1.1 I just exited and restarted SnagIt.

Thanks for suggestions, unfortunetly none of the above worked.  I reverted back on my windows update and snagit is working again as the default snipping tool.   I am going to submit a ticket to TechSmith.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/may-24-2023-kb5026446-os-build-22621-1778-preview-3c547100-7a73-4ae6-bb7d-ebd02e87dc04  doesn't even mention this change. It is a preview, not the final version, but even so.

Hopefully either Microsoft will revert this change or TechSmith with make sure that SnagIt can override Windows hijacking the Print Screen key.

This is also mentioned in https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2023/05/11/releasing-windows-11-build-22621-1776-to-the-release-preview-channel/:

Hello Windows Insiders, today (May 11, 2023) we’re releasing Windows 11 Build 22621.1776 (KB5026446to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel on Windows 11, version 22H2.

    • New! This update changes the default print screen (prt scr) key behavior. Pressing the print screen key opens the Snipping Tool by default. You can turn off this setting from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. If you have previously changed this setting, Windows will preserve your preference.

This needs to go into the Capture FAQs
