Solution for Snagit 2020 on Windows 11 always displaying Simplified Crosshairs
Hello everyone, I recently did a fresh install of Windows 11 on a new PC and found that Snagit 2020 would only display simplified crosshairs in Windows 11, not the normal crosshairs, even though the simplified crosshairs option is turned off.
I raised a support ticket with TechSmith, but so far I've just received all the standard time-wasting replies of: try resetting everything, try turning on/off this and that option, please send us diagnostic data, etc. No acknowledgement of the bug (which they would see for themselves if they tried), which other users apart from me have also encountered.
Anyway, I did some digging and I found the issue. I suspect TechSmith will never fix Snagit 2020 at this point, and will probably never acknowledge that the problem even exists. Well, here is the solution I found.
Basically, Snagit 2020 is seeing Windows 11 as being a virtual machine, even though I don't have Hyper-V installed and I've turned off Core Isolation. So my Windows 11 is definitely not running on top of a Type 1 Hypervisor, and therefore is not running in any kind of virtualized state. Still, Snagit 2020 thinks it is. If you click 'Help -> Technical Support' the diagnostic info says:
Virtualization: OtherVM
So, that's the cause. If Snagit 2020 is run in a virtual environment or on more than 2 monitors, it will always use Simplified Crosshairs. So to work around Snagit's false assumption about this being a VM I found I was able to do the following:
Edit the registry and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\TechSmith\SnagIt\20
Add a new String value and name it VMOverride. Then double-click on VMOverride and change the value to None
Finally, quit and restart Snagit. And like magic, your normal crosshairs are possible again.
