It looks like you may be working with audio files from 3rd party sources? I saw Audio Blocks mentioned in clip titles.

Camtasia has trouble ingesting some audio formats and I suspect that may be a problem.

If so, converting them to another format can work wonders. Camtasia's all time favorite is .wav 44,100 Hz 16 bit.

Your CPU is no powerhouse but I don't see anything that suggests it should be overwhelmed. It would probably struggle with 4K video, but shouldn't crash the program.

I would try disabling GPU acceleration. Its in settings under the advanced tab. You'll have to re-start Camtasia for the change to take hold. You have integrated graphics which robs power from the CPU to function. It can work against you.

The fact is that I have been using Camtasia on the same laptop since Camtasia 2019 and I had no issues.  The audio I am using is a .wav recording of my voice which I recorded in Audacity, as I have done hundreds of times in the past before importing to Camtasia.  The video element is a screen recording done on Camtasia.  I have no high maintenance elements in this project and the only thing I tried to do with an outline annotation (red).  The entire project is 1.5 minutes in length.  My laptop is no powerhouse but this should not happen, since I have developed far more complex projects in Camtasia without a crash.

I am going to reinstall Camtasia to see if it fixes it.

Another issue which is most definitely a bug.  Audio will sound glitchy when you add a Clip Speed to it.  It doesn't matter if the speed is 1.03x or .90x the audio will begin to glitch.  This never happened before and I know because I have tested the same project on an older version of Camtasia and it played the audio without issue.

I was flying blind with no details about the project. I didn’t know how long you had used Camtasia or anything else, so I was shooting from the hip, trying to help using the information provided.

The additional information is helpful. What version of Camtasia are you running?

I’ve been using the product for a very long time but I’m not tech support, I’m a user like you.

A recent Windows update may have made the program unstable. You can check update history, see if there was a system update just before it started happening. Uninstall it and see if it resolves it. If so, how to handle it will vary based on what version of Camtasia you’re using.

Windows has become a stable operating system. It’s becoming uncommon { In my experience } for programs to become corrupted and a reinstall repairs it. It’s a good place to start and eliminates gremlins.

Anyway, keep posting on your progress.

The version is displayed on the top left of the screen of the video I posted above.  The video demonstrates this particular issue with crashing.

based on a rare issue I've had with Camtasia 2023 [being actively investigated by tech support], perhaps try something ...

I note you are using a colored Windows cursor

as a test, revert to the Windows default mouse [size and color]

are you still able to reproduce the crashes?

This is totally happening to me as well. I cannot even use Camtasia 2023 as it crashes constantly doing just about anything. I am hoping an update comes soon to fix this.

    Same.

    I often have this problem.
With My Case after screen recording if I create the project and edit it right away there is usually no problem.
However if I export this video to mp4, and use this mp4 file in another project then it crash rate is 90%.
Do you use any previously exported files in this project?

Same for me. I contacted support, but no clear solution, unfortunately.

    Dear all,

the same happens to me since yesterday.

    CAMTASIA 2023.0.2 just closes abruptly.

After just 30 seconds of work (which allows me only adding an audio mp3 to the playlist head), it begins to "think" and closes.

    Any help?

    Thank you!

Every ones hardware configuration is different in the Windows environment however in my case support was able to suggest that I change my Hardware Acceleration settings in Camtasia -> Edit -> Preferences  -> Advanced -> In the drop-down area of "Hardware Acceleration" select -> Use graphic card - Microsoft Basic Render Driver. Yes, MP4s in the preview window might look jittery, but no more crashes.

I have yet to run a final cut render to see if the video maintains a smooth frame rate, but for right now I can do my edits without a crash.

Same here with the latest 2023 , so far Tech Support regrettably hasn't had any luck. Crashing, freezing, and on and on. They are still looking into it, fingers crossed,

I've gone back to a previous version and removed 2023,  but it's not what we paid for as we bought the latest version and expect it to work. My employees are now testing other Editors/Screen-capture products as alternatives going forward. It may be one of those situations where it's been updated repeatedly over time and is now "buggered" with conflicts,

Same here... since I upgraded to Camtasia 2023.01, I can't export videos anymore. It just carshes at 2/3 of the process. Worst thing is that tech support isn't responding to my messages at all! I am about to ask for a refund after using Camtasia for many years and switch to another editing program, since this is crucial for my company. Almost feels like they are losing control at Camtasia...

Same here. 2021 running smoothly, while 2023 opens with all the promise in the world, and then it seems to do something like trying to find something online, or checking out my OneDrive, upon which it crashes, tries to generate a crash report, and then just becomes stuck altogether requiring a close through Task manager.

Very disappointing, TechSmith 2023. Thank goodness for TechSmith 2021! What a lifesaver :)

do you save projects as standalone projects into a OneDrive synched folder?

are any of these projects referenced on the Camtasia Home Page?

  • Wilhelm

kayakman, no, I only use local files. My custom presets, etc. are in a OneDrive folder, but this crash happens directly after installation with no custom anything defined yet or any files opened yet. After clicking 'new project' on the landing page / welcome screen (wish-I-could-skip) page, the editor opens, pauses for 5 or so seconds, and then attempts to open the crash report screen, up on which it goes into total fit until timeout. :\

just to be sure ... is your connection to OneDrive live/working?

does the presets folder on OneDrive sync location look like this [with status checks]?

and have you filed a ticket with tech support?

I just upgraded today from Camtasia 2022.5.0.43121 to 2023.1.2.47293 and it has already crashed 4 times in one day. The 2022 version NEVER crashed on me in the entire year that I've been using it. But now all my projects have been upgraded to 2023 and are no longer compatible with 2022 so I'm stuck with it. I'm not doing anything complex at all, and I am also saving to my local drive. I'm so sorry I upgraded and it sounds like there is no solution to this issue. I submitted a ticket but don't feel very hopeful. Has anyone had any luck fixing this?

when you upgraded your 2022 projects to 2023, Camtasia should have made backup copies of those 2022 projects; did you keep those backups?

you can down-version a 2023 project to 2022; but any new 2023 features that you may have used will not down-version

    what are your system specs?

I was having no problems with 2023 until I installed version 2023.1.2.

After that, the editor was crashing with Camtasia recordings that were under 2 minutes in duration. Dragging around callouts was a nightmare, they jumped from track, to track at times.

More often than not, the editor behaved well until it didn't.

My fix was to uninstall 2023.1.2

    Install 2023.1.1
