    Hello Joyce,
I made you a video showing how you can accomplish this. The main points are to flatten your image (if applicable) and using the paint bucket tool to "pour" transparency over the white color.

I'm using Snagit 2.1.5 on my Mac and after selecting the paint bucket tool, I cannot locate the transparent option among the color choices. I'm frustrated.

How do you go about setting the background transparency on an image using the new version of Snagit 2018?  With the new interface redesign, I'm completely lost of doing this task that I used to know so well with my previous version of Snagit.

Right click the image and select Canvas Colour then select the trasnaparent background.

Remember you need to save the image as a PNG because jpg doesn't support transparency.

To apply transparency to a (probably white) background, use the Fill Tool in the top menu (click More, if it the Fill Tool is not currently visible)

Changing a background to transparent seems like a small task, but it is one of the things I use Snagit for the most.  Thanks.

Sorry, I have to apologize to you (and Techsmith). I am part of the pre-release program and it appears that this may be an option that isn't currently available (since you don't have it). I wasn't aware that this was a "new" option.

    Thanks and sorry again.

Are you using a Mac to get this option? I don't get anything but color choices when I select the fill tool.

That's quite alright. The transparency tool has been around for such a long time in a variety of graphic programs, I'm finding it difficult to believe that it's not available in Snagit on the Mac platform. I do hope they're working on it.

I always had the transparency 'fill' option but it has totally disappeared on my MAC. Where has it gone, does anyone know? I've been all round the web here and it seems that this is an issue that lies with the developers so may not be fixable.....can anyone advise please? Also in all of my tools selection, I only now have one choice for each whereas before I had loads. What is happening here Snagit?

What version of Snagit do you have?

Also, can you try going to preferences, click on the advanced tab and click on the Restore Gallery Styles button. Hopefully, that will get your tools back.

kurrykid...thanks so much it totally worked!!

    I have a separate
question...now that I've made the background transparent, is there a
way to change the color of the font that is now in the image?

Hi, Restoring gallery did the trick, thanks very much.

Restoring Gallery Styles worked for me too! You've redeemed yourself, Dave. Thanks so much.

I'm on a MacBook Pro with Snagit v2.1.7 (75617) and I went to preferences and tried the "Restore Gallery Styles" with no effect. I still can't change the background to a transparency.

You need to change the background"Canvas"  to transparent first .

Why is this not working for me? I have windows, and I see the Paint Bucket, and transparency, but it does nothing when I use it. Any clues? I use Sangit V12. Thanks!

Thanks for the answers.  You answered my question about eliminating the background when the background has a slight gradient, or slightly different shades from a photo.  I was not aware of the "Tolerance" feature before.

Why is this still not working for me? I have windows, and I see the Paint Bucket, and transparency. It appears to change the background to transparent with the white/gray checks. However, when the image is inserted into the graphic the background is still showing as opaque white. Any direction would help. I'm using V11.

After you drop the image into the canvas, try right-clicking it and choosing to "flatten" it. Then use the paint bucket to fill the white area.

This does not work for me either and it's extremely frustrating. I used to be able to have a canvas start as a transparent background. I'm using Mac v 3.3.7. Restoring gallery styles does not work. There is no transparent option to choose from for the paint bucket tool. Please help.

Posting here in case it helps someone else. I'm on v13.1.5 on Windows 10. From the Image menu, choose Canvas Color and select the desired background color (including Transparent).

I've also found it helps to change the file type to png. jpg doesn't seem to support the transparent background. Then just use the paint bucket with the transparent color selected.
