Snagit 12 is not to my liking

Have you considered trying video? One benefit of video is that you can also record your voice to help convey your message.

If I wanted to record video I have Camtasia. I want to use Snagit to grab images, nothing more. What was once so simple is no longer so.

I appreciate your "assistance" but it feels like it is off topic. Thanks any way.

Unfortunately, I agree with part of your assessment.  Snagit continues the unfortunate trend toward flattening user controls - in other words, making it harder to tell where they are.  And the dark colors used in the Snagit Editor only serve to make this worse.  There should at least be a user-preference option to select a different-colored skin or color scheme for the editor.  The extra keypress to select image/video is not extremely burdensome.  There is a way around it, by creating a capture profile and reassigning the main Snagit capture hotkey to that profile.  But I haven't found a way to make the big red button directly execute that profile.  Of course, if you choose to do this, you lose the ability to resize the capture area by dragging it, once you've let go of the mouse button.  If you keep that in mind, I think you won't mind so much, having to select either image or video each time.

Gave Snagit 12 a few days trial and this morning reverted to Snagit 11.3.0.107 the last version I liked. The new version 12 UI/UX is poorly executed without regard to existing user needs and preferences. This is a common practice since Apple rose to such prominence in the design space.

I guess I am done with ever updating Snagit again. Too bad, I liked it very much, once upon a time. I feel rooked in that I paid TechSmith for the privilege of updating Snagit and then wasting my time on this.

I hope the Snagit and Camtasia design teams are separate. I would be equally unhappy for TechSmith to do to Camtasia what they did to Snagit in version 12. I am hoping this design stupidity is confined to Snagit.

write your own do loops inside of do loops to copy and paste

I am sure many Snagit users would find it extremely beneficial if you would explain how to use do loops (in what language?) to interface with the Snagit GUI to improve its behavior...

Hi Folks, I am struggling with version 12 as well. I used to be able to blow up an image to say 1200% and remove garbage at the pixel level. Now the 'View' is gone. Does anyone know where this is?

    Hi,
You can turn the pixel grid on or off by clicking on the down arrow in the zoom tool at the bottom of the Editor screen:

You do have to be zoomed in to at least 600% in order to use the pixel grid.
    I hope this helps!

I am not sure why TechSmith does not make the Image/Video question an OPTION? Like this choice of radio buttons in each screenshot profile:
    • Image screenshot
    • Video screenshot
    • Ask the user [actual behavior]
That's how I would do it. It would make all people happy.

"BTW: One of the most essential properties of communism is: People have no choice."

Sorry, been there. Actually they have MORE personal freedoms than in the US as long as you didn't criticize the party That could earn you a stiff jail term. However you could brew your own beer with not license, distill alcohol. In Kiev I have seen women at night walking in unlit underpasses (as in almost totally dark) with no fear of harassment or attack

Methinks that last statement of yours, Peter, is a little harsh, as well as inaccurate.  But that's a matter for a political discussion, somewhere other than on this forum.

I too miss features that have disappeared, such as the text capture.  I detest the color scheme.  I'm not sure about parts of the new interface, but I'm not senile yet, and my brain and fingers can adapt, as long as the old functionality remains.

Techsmith has, in the past, heeded feedback from its users.  Let us hope they supply some options that will address our concerns.

They haven't yet since this release. It seems to be a take it or leave it proposition
As for the prompt every time you capture, that is a major interruption. I would be more than happy to create another profile that would let me do that, but it does not seem possible

Rick, see my earlier post above for a suggestion about a way you can do a profile.  Does that help at all?

This seems to be solved if you use the red button dropdown (since the 4/18 release) If you chose from there, it bypasses the video / image choice panel. I need to play with this more

It is a good work around, but I often get into situations where I am making one capture after another and have them come up in the editor or clipboard for pasting. They really need to make that optional as they already had in the profile. That is one of the new features that is actually regressive and works against the profile scheme that they already had it place
Thanks though, for the suggestion and the reply :)

I was a user of a previous version 10? at a previous job and it worked perfectly.  I just had purchasing buy SnagIt and I cannot get it to do something as simple as screen capturing, editing in the editor and pasting into GMail running in Chrome.  Something I did EVERY-DAY with the previous version.  Is there any way a new customer can downgrade?  I don't need PROFILES.  I am the only user.  PLEASE let me get the old version!

That seems to be technical support's solution

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
    Snagit 12 user inteface.

SnagIt 12 is a step backward in designing user interfaces. In v.11, you had one neat window where you had most of the choices you needed, until you went to the Editor of course. In v.12 you get a thin bar at the top of the screen that provides little of what v.11 gave you without going to an icon that moves you a second screen that is not as good at the one in v.11.

I can't imagine what you folks were thinking. It's fine to add functions and upgrade an application. It's not OK to degrade the user interface and make it more awkward to use.

I will keep using version v.11. I have no idea what to do with v.12. I certainly will not recommend it to anyone until the user interface is restored.

    Hello,

I completely understand why you may be frustrated with v.12.  We already have had a new minor update, 12.1 that has addressed some concerns, and 12.2 is also on its way. However, I am not aware of any plans currently for v.12 to alter ribbon interface.

As you have mentioned as well, you can always continue to use v.11 if you are more satisfied with that version.

It is a bit different and takes some getting used to. Which was very frustrating for people's workflow. I have come to grips with it and don't mind it so much anymore.I DO wish they would add the windows folder pane back in even though if snagit detects changes in location it updates it's information. I have a bunch of clips sorted by folder
Thanks for all you do and thanks for cleaning up version 12

^^ It's not the point of being "satisfied" with a previous version.. While missing out on any-and-all improvements in new releases; yet the atrocious UI of v12 makes it virtually unusable. :-f

Revert back to a previous version? Thst's the suggestion after a really bad "upgrade"? I am recommending my company find something else.

Just bought SnagIt 12 - already regretting it to no end!

In addition to what you wrote, why in the world can I not just capture a screen and go to the editor just like in in 11.x and previous?   Do the cross-hairs have to come up each and every time?  No settings that I can see to change the default behavior.

Why all of the sudden I have to create "Profiles" to do what was ALREADY in v11?   IOW, why are you taking out functionality of a product and still charging for it?   Just like with the Stamps, etc., a few revisions back, you appear to have developers leaving TechSmith in droves and the few that are left appear to be very over-worked.

Ok so even if I buy your "explanation" of the dark interface to match with the others - did you EVER stop and ask customers BEFORE you released the product what they thought of it?  Did it ever occur to you that maybe those other products with the dark UIs don't like them, either?

This is without a doubt the worst version of SnagIt since its' inception (v12.1).

It has seriously made me consider alternatives, and I've been a loyal customer for many years.

    Exasperating.

I was going to request that a configuration option be added to turn the image/video selector bar off, but following Jakob Engblom's suggestion above used the Hotkeys tab under program preferences first to set Global capture to Alt + Print Screen and then Image capture to Print Screen, so making it work just like I'm used to from earlier Snagit versions.

However I seem to have encountered a bug in Snagit 12:
After clicking the Restore Defaults button (just to see that happened) I could not repeat the above Hotkey settings changes because the row for Image capture was no longer visible. So now I'm stuck with the default Print Screen key being associated with Global capture (rather than Image capture). Is this a known bug, or am I imagining it?

Is the "Row for  Image capture" that you cannot see in the Manage  Profiles Window???
Because I could not replicate your problem. However, a repair install can solve a lot of problems. You won't need your product key. It will not effect any of the Options you have changed in the program. It will just repair anything that is amiss within the program. It only takes a couple of min. to run it. It will do no harm. See Attached Image below.

Faststone capture is good, anyone try?

  • rgrun
Yes - it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of snagit but it works well

  • rickyf
I tried. It works fine. It is not as good as Snagit but then they don't keep changing the UI either.

ithink faststone is better in some ways. easier to highlight part of a capture. see my capture here
