TechSmith Jing 2018 Announcement
For the past 11 years we have provided Jing for free. Our customers have found significant value from Jing, based on the high number of downloads and positive ratings. With Adobe’s upcoming retirement of Flash (planned December 2020), Jing’s current video format (.swf) will no longer be supported by web browsers. As a result, we have received many questions about the future of Jing.
We have decided to end development on Jing, and to build a replacement tool. We remain committed to offering a free solution because we are passionate about making it easy for anyone to capture and share knowledge visually. But, we feel that the best long-term approach to achieving our mission with a free offering is to build a new product from the ground up. The new recorder will be built into and accessible within the Screencast and Relay interfaces, with videos stored in Screencast (free or pro) or Relay. We are unable to commit to specific timing for inclusion of this tool within Screencast but it will be in 2019, and we will be able to provide a date update in the spring. This new screen recorder is planned to have many advantages over Jing video including mp4 videos, webcam support, and longer videos, and it will remain advertising-free.
We will continue to offer Jing to new and existing users as long as it is valued as-is. Note that a significant amount of Jing’s usage is for image capture and markup which, unlike video recording, is unaffected by Flash retirement.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Is Jing going to be upgraded without flash?.
Jing is fabulous - a neat, easy to use screen capture tool that is enough for many use cases.
But as flash will be killed off by 2020 - and is already deprecated in many instances - will Jing's output be upgraded to a non-flash container? My only conclusion if it isn't - is that Jing will die out with Flash - which would be very sad :-(0 -
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I can't play the swf files made from Jing in my Chrome browser anymore.
I created several videos with Jing for a series of procedures. Since i had a lot, i moved them to AmazonS3 hosting, and linked to that new location. But now, i have an odd issue: they don't play on my Chrome browser anymore.
I have reinstalled Flash player, i have reinstalled Chrome, but whenever i try to play the video, it freezes there, and nothing can get it to start playing.
Not only the videos that i moved can't be played on my computer, even those saved directly to Screencast won't play as illustrated in this video: http://screencast.com/t/q0ojrv843 (hopefully YOU can see it because i can't).
Oddly enough they play fine on a different computer, so i am not sure why this computer suddenly started not playing those videos.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mojave beta complained that Jing needs to be updated. I didn't copy the error message, and I can't get it to come back, and Jing seems to work so maybe it's a nothing burger, but thought it worth bringing up with you!0 -
Build the features of JING into SnagIt please. 0 -
Would you mind sharing which features of Jing you'd like to see in Snagit? Thanks for your input! 0 -
I only use Jing to capture images not for video. When I attempt to update I get an error saying that the update is improperly signed and the only option is to cancel update And yet it says it must be updated within 14 days. 0 -
Thank you for your prompt response. That worked. 0 -
You can get the latest version of Jing from here:
https://www.techsmith.com/jing-tool.html
There is a problem with the updater in the version you have, which is why you're getting that error, so I'm afraid you need to go to the website above to get the current version.0 -
glad to hear it! 0 -
Hi there,
I've made a ton of videos using Jing for various classes that I teach. What would make me incredibly happy is if Techsmith would offer a way of converting my Jing videos in .swf format to a new supportable format. Perhaps this is too much to hope for, but wow, that would be so great! All the more so if this could be done directly on Screencast.com. Is there any chance of something like this happening? Or is there anything else you can recommend I do to preserve what I have? The prospect of dealing with my Jing videos expiring makes we want to move away from screencast software in my teaching.
Thanks for your reply!

In the same way, we also have milliards of video-conversations with educational content that have constructed our knowledge and experience center already saved in swf.
If Tech Smith has no plans to preserve the ability to reproduce content from Dec 2020 onward, we should be prepared and to plan the migration of all of the content on a timely manner.
We are a certified training international center and we have a reputation built over the past 20 years relying on the platform of Tech Smith, so we are unable to leave this critical issue without the proper attention.
We would like to know this particular aspect of the migration of Jing your are working on, and we trust you are dealing with solving this.
Please let as know as soon as you can, thanks in advance0 -
There are no current plans to automatically convert all of the existing SWF videos to another format. 0 -
Is it fair to say it's up to each user to perform any conversions as they see fit? What about any kind of tool or link to a tool that would allow it for those that need to? 0 -
That is fair to say, yes. We've been hesitant to suggest a particular tool, having not done enough testing on the millions of pieces of content and potential problems they may have. However, I appreciate that others here have been trying some and sharing their suggestions (such as yourself). 0 -
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Videos in any other format (e.g. .mp4) that do not require Flash Player when play....
Do you happen to have a plan for creating the Jing videos in any other format (for example .mp4) so that Flash Player is not needed when playing the file?0 -

I hope the new option is simple as Jing was, especially in terms of basic titles and arrows. SnagIt is just overly complicated for our simple tech support images / short clips we email to customers. 0 -
Any news on when a release is planned? To me it sounds like the obvious successor would be a free version of SnagIt, why build a whole new tool when snagit can do everything? I'd be happy to take part in a beta program if that is available. Top featurues that I would like to see.
* Normal screen shots (of course) with area, full window, full screen etc.
* Screen recording. I don't have a problem with a limit on time, e.g. 5 minutes or so.
* If possible the option to edit recording. At least be able to cut parts of the recording
* A sharing option ala screencast.com.
* Basic editing features like crop, arrows, step counter (round circle with numbers) to add step-by-step instructions, blur and pixelate, squares circles etc.
The option that comes most close to all this is TinyTake by MangoApps. What I am really missing is a better blur/pixelate option and step counter.0 -
This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Jing Crashing Mac Mojave.
Maybe I'm in the wrong discussion but, Jing is crashing on my Mac now. I'm using the new Mojave 10.14.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Jing but it still crashes when recording a video. I did manage a screen shot.
Any help would be appreciated.

thank you for your commitment to Jing! I love the simplicity of it and can't wait to have video support once again! 0 -
Can videos currently stored on the Screencast site be converted to a format that will work if Flash is not supported? How? 0 -
Hi there
One way is to download the SWF and put it through a transcoder to convert it to something like MP4. Then upload it again to ScreenCast.0 -
Is there a free transcoder available somewhere? 0 -
You might give this one a try:
https://convertio.co/swf-mp4/
What would be cool would be for TechSmith to either link to one or provide the ability right within ScreenCast. But I'm unsure if that's in their plans.0 -
Thank you. Yes, it would definitely be appreciate if TechSmith would help non-techies like me with that task. 0 -
Perhaps this is what you need. I've never used it but it appears to be free and works. 0 -
It looks like the one Rick suggested is free to download, but not free to use. 0 -
A new school year has started and as an instructional designer I have been inundated with Jing issues from faculty (mainly, students can not open Jing content, with the root cause being the swf format of Jing video). The announcement was that a replacement tool would be available in 2019. Is that still the case? I do not want my fix to be "enable Flash in your browser everytime you want to watch a video." We really want to stay with TechSmith and use the replacement tool, but the clock is ticking for us to have to come up with a different solution. 0 -
Thank you for sharing your situation with us and continuing to place your trust in TechSmith to help meet your educator's needs. We did in fact promise a solution to the ongoing SWF related browser issues this year and we have been hard at work to that end.
Early next week, we will begin to share out our replacement to the Jing video issue and provide clear directions then on how to access that new tool which will support the more modern video format MP4. Thanks for your patience as we finalize things and ensure the new tool is ready to share with all of you.
Thanks,

Is there any update on this? After updating to MacOS Catalina, I no longer am able to use Jing, or SnagIt. Jing was my goto utility for sharing financial charts. I downloaded SnagIt to give it a try and it locks up my entire market program requiring me to "force quit" my program after every screen capture. How about just putting Jing into the public domain and allow another developer to take up the project? Or just remove the video portion from Jing and make it available again? 0
