    Hi Luc,

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention! Just to make sure I understand your problem correctly, is it that once your video is paused by the hotspot, a learner can click anywhere and the video will go on, no matter where you've placed the hotspot?

    Thanks,

    Luc,

I did some investigation around what you are seeing and it looks like this is a bug in Camtasia's SmartPlayer that was not previously known to us. So thank you again for making us aware of it!
The bug is now being tracked by development staff and will be fixed. Unfortunately, I've spoken with several people and we're not aware of any workaround for this issue at the moment. However, we'll be sure to update this thread when we have fixed the bug.

Thank you again and we're sorry for the trouble you've been encountering.

Culver, a user below has indicated that the bug is fixed in Camtasia 2018. Is this correct? If so, will it ever be fixed in Camtasia 9? I don't want to have to buy a new license to fix something that was supposed to work in the version I bought already. Any advice?

I'm happy to say that our developers have been able to quickly release a partial fix to this bug. If you share your videos to Screencast.com, the issue is fixed and pausing-with-hotspots should work correctly. This fix is already available on Screencast.com and does not require downloading a new version of Camtasia. However, sharing to our other destinations does not yet work correctly and will be addressed at a later point in time.

I cannot reproduce your issue with Camtasia 2018.0.4.; when hotspot stops play, it must be clicked to continue; clicking elsewhere on video frame does not start play

tested both local and screencast.com plays

but if viewer clicks the player's play button, video will continue

This is madness, i cannot put files on screencast as the client wants to keep them locally but wants interactivity.
*Update, Lol, just tried in Screencast and still have the same problem. the hotspot is not specifically targeted and results in the user being able to click anywhere. Which Sucks!

I have yet to upgrade and am using 9.1. It stops ok but it is allowing me to click anywhere.

there have been a couple of upgrades to the smart player since CS 9; suggest you upgrade

The client is unable to upgrade and I am unable to use any other on a personal device due to security reasons and lock down on the environment. So that's an impractical answer.

    Hi Sean,
Currently we no longer ship newer versions of the TechSmith Smart Player with previous major versions of Camtasia.  If you contact our tech support (https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us) they'd be happy to walk you through manually updating the Smart Player for an existing production.  You will just have to replace 2 files in the production folder.

Sorry for the extra hassle, but I hope this helps,
    Ben

That's great thanks. Happy to try it. Personally I will be upgrading but as I say that's no good when you are tied to using client kit. Thanks again

Ben, what are the 2 files that need replacing?

IMO those files should be made available to all.

A article with instructions and a file(s) download published.

This problem for me was a hit or miss occurrence.

I have a copy of 9.1.2 installed and at this time can not reproduce the problem.

Only clicking on the hotspot progresses the video but thats not to say it's not a problem for others.

    :)

    Awesome Ben,

    Thanks for doing that.

I imagine many others will be happy too for your effort.

Hello, does this mean the fix will not work when a video is produced as an mp4 with the smart player? Is there any way to be notified when the fix for that type of sharing is released?
    Thanks!

Currently, I am creating a software tutorial and after I publish, I can click anywhere on the screen when a hotspot section appears and it will continue.

Has this bug been fixed yet? I just came across the same issue as lukevdb. I have to publish to my own website, so using screencast.com isn't an option for me.

To my knowledge it hasn't been fixed in the locally produced content. It would require an update to Camtasia and I don't believe I've seen one since that point in time.

Hey Rick, is the problem stil lunsolved?

The whole Hotspot thing doesn't make any sense, when you can klick everywhere on the screen

    HI there

Sorry, but TechSmith has the viewpoint that this is a security issue. As such, it's my understanding there are no plans to change it back.

    Rick,
As an instructional designer I think I speak for many developers who have leveraged hot spots for learner competency checks. Where do you click to do X sort of things.
Please further explain the security issue as the other tool I use, Captivate, provides this functionality with no issues.
I was just wanting to move my production tasks over to Camtasia, it is a great tool and quick to build in, but this could prove to be a show stopper.  Thanks for taking this back to the team and reconsidering.

    LOL, if only I could!

All I can say is that TechSmith has stated that it's their own position that this is a security issue.  My own view is that they should leave the functionality in place and allow the end user to decide if any real security risk is involved.

I'm also a Captivate user and share your views on it. And I'm not really affiliated with TechSmith other than to be an enthusiastic user of their products.

    Cheers... Rick :)
