There are a bunch but they may not fit what you are trying to do. Fastone is the main contender but you can't drag and drop into it
Here is Gizmo's list . Many are free

Thanks for your very good and interesting list. Will have a look at Fastone. Any others you would suggest either from the list or elsewhere? I have no high hopes that TechSmith can rebuild and solve this in near future.

FasStone would be an appropriate alernative I guess.
In fact I regularly use it, where SnagIt fails... or in instances where I need a capture of a capture (FastStone capturing a screenshot from SnagItEditor).
    I still use v11.x as I don't like v12 / v13.

I need FastStone for screenrecording: SnagIt seems to have a but as it does not finalize the recording.

I need FastStone for specific screenshots that can not be captured using SnagIt.
For instance: a window panel called from another window panel (like in settings),
    or, like the below...
The 'not responding' window could nót be captured by SnagIt, so I used FastStone for that.
Drawback of FastStone: no support, but then again, basically it is just 20 bucks for a lifetime license...

    Highly Recommend "FastStoneCapture"
    http://www.faststone.org/

I've NEVER cared for TechSmith's oddly exclusive and entitled attitude.  The pricing is absurd.  the product I recommended is about $10 for LIFE with constant upgrades.  I think it's amazing : record video/audio, scroll capture, full editing (amazing) as addendum, and so MUCH MORE!

    Best of luck!

My alternative was to uninstall 13 and go back to 12 which worked more reliably for what I was after. I just found 13 to finikey and it would not properly do rolling scans in Edge.  For some reason always came up scrolling pano.  Issues with printing required a special driver rather than the full HP driver.

What is irksome is that people were offered and UPGRADE . Tech support offers the same solution but ...  is the only solution to abandoned what you paid for?
Tour email is offered in good faith and it IS a solution but ...
Doesn't it wrankle you just a bit? I guess we trusted them to make a better product and once the money is in the till ... "use what you had before"

That does seem ironic. However, I prefer to believe there are good intentions, but regrettably an inability on the part of TechSmith management to properly analyse and  draw the obvious conclusions.
Earlier if I were to be marooned on a desert island, the one programme I would have taken with me would have been Snagit. I cant say that today.

So rfmiller, it's a question of going back to the latest in the 12 version series if one thinks in terms of Snagit (windows)?

We are just about to purchase multiple copies and I think I'm going to tell everyone to install 12 instead of 13.   I just upgraded.   Not happy.

sounds very wise! you should check differences between the best 11 and 12 versions, or even put the question here .

I am also actively looking. The problem with my situation is that I am part of a very large company and am mandated to use the latest release of all software bought by the company. This is to ensure continuity between departments. So it is actually easier for us to replace about 50 seats than it is for some to go back to an earlier version. Here is another thing for us...money isn't really an object. I speak for the majority of users across our company when I say that all I want is a fully functioning, industrial screen recording software. Right now we are looking at Adobe. But I really wish there was another option.

I agree with you.  I have the new adobe Acrobat Pro and they have done the same thing with their software.  The prior version was brain dead easy to use.  The new one is all over the place and not at all user friendly when it comes to doing the routine easy things you do most of the time.  The analogy I always come down to is it is like buying a car.  No matter what care I get into the clutch, brake, gas peddle, steering wheel and turn signals are all generally in the same place.  But in software every time there is an update everything moves around.  MS found out that did not work with Windows 8 and fixed it in Windows 10.  Maybe others will learn too?

That is an awesome for screen recording and it can be used  via the online webpage or a desktop program. It is EASY to edit and then save to external sources such as dropbox etc.
It is worth a look before settling on an Adobe product

Well MdlMkr there is the Adobe range as you say, what  would you consider there product and version wise ?  Are there really no other options that users would recommend apart from Adobe, and as Rick suggested Fastone. Screenomatic seems to be web based - major disadvantge for me - though he does mention a desktop version. Will have to check that out.

    Hi brt;

It is quite unfortunate that you find you need to move away from the Snagit brand; would you mind sharing what in particular it is that you are struggling with, or what it is that you are finding you cannot do with Snagit that you are hoping to find elsewhere?

Note that we do offer fully functional free trials of Snagit, so when a new version launches new and existing users are encouraged to try the latest release before purchasing to see if it is a good fit for you. Upgrading, as always, remains an option, and if an existing version covers your needs, you can stay on that build (or re-download them from here; please keep in mind that legacy versions may not be supported, to keep up to date on supported applications, see here).

Did you want to address the issue of trust? The bean counters may blow it of as intangible but Snigit's trust is rapidly evaporating and that WILL translate into dollars and cents

You have been helpful here and I am not ragging on you but do you feel the ARROGANCE of selling something to someone then telling them to abandon it for they previous purchase?

If upper management doesn't see it, they are "not seeing it) on purpose

Actually, the comment about being free was related to TechSmith support. ;)

Rick, it doesn't have to be free. Snagit wasn't and I was very satisfied with it
    until about 18 months ago.

Robert, thanks. In general the reasons are similar to those expressed by others.  The new interface whcih makes work processes much longer and inefficent- many steps backwards -   captures being rendered as "beanstalks (long and thin),  extortionate time to finalize a video recording  that is X hours longer than the orignal and has to be cut ( I tried to save TechSmith by suggesting a user defined maximum recording time based on the length of the original some years ago but received the usual "brush off" . One option is to go back to an earlier version, but I would say TechSmith has lost a lot of credibility because even if you solve user dissatisfaction, there is now the question of trust. Can we trust and believe in any new version? There is a problem here that grows with every passing day that TechSmith does not solve the problems users have spent valuable time identifying for TechSmith. Some of us have work to do on the side.

One step in the right direction I believe would be if TechSmith draws up a list of what it understands to be the main concerns of users, publishes this with their solutions and we vote on it!
Maybe too radical, but at least there could be a solution if TS moves very fast and prioritises resources to do this. Failing something like this, I am very sorry but I believe the game is truly and finally up. Sad becasue there was so much goodwill.

Robert R.,  surprised not to receive a response from you. Why not ??? I would like to know what you feel about my suggestion for restoring confidence in TechSmith's development team. No expensive market survey is needed, you have all the data from user comments. And if you base your ideas on these, You could rescue the situation. I have gone back like many other users to version 11 and will test this against 12. But will never touch 13 with a barge pole again and would have to be convinced TechSmith has properly and effectively addressed user concerns.

Robert R.,  would just like to add to make the picture complete that in the past I have received superb technical support from TechSmith (Nate) but there is a limit to what tech support can do.

    Hi brt;

My apologies for the delay, some unexpected time off crept in and I'm just getting back into the swing of things; as to your question? Unfortunately there is no way that I can promise any sort of roadmapping (we mention as such in both this month's feature request round-up as well as the community update provided by TechSmith Leadership) in any real capacity.

While I cannot provide any form of roadmap I can pass your feedback along to the development team (I meet regularly with the Technical Product Managers so your feedback will be heard) and though the forums here are often quite lively, I would like to point out that they are not the only source of feedback used; we send numerous surveys out to trial users, users that have not upgraded, users that have contacted our Sales team, not to mention the data we collect in person or via the anonymous data collection we do (which can be turned on or off in the application preferences). Part of what I do, outside of the work I do on our Technical Support team, is to gather the information here in the forums and pass it along to the appropriate teams. Another thing to note is that desktop development is not an overnight process and each feature or change needs to be reviewed to ensure it fits with our vision for our products. Please keep in mind that opening a support ticket is the proper process for reporting bugs or getting assistance with technical problems; if we continue to see technical issues that are common across many users, we can fast track the issue and escalate to the appropriate development team for review.

Digging deeper into the concerns that you have regarding credibility and trust; regarding credibility and trust; you definitely have the ability to trial a major version of Snagit to see if it’s right for you before you upgrade. If you felt that was not true, I’d like to understand more about the process you went through then perhaps I can then push for us to develop some sort of process that encourages the "try before you buy" method. I know that from a Support point of view we often comment on how we would prefer users to stick with the software that they need, rather than blindly upgrade to find out that the changes are things that existing users do not need. Please note that I am in no way discounting the loyalty that you have shown (and if it seems that I am, it is not my intention and I am deeply sorry if it comes off that way) and I am empathetic to the issues you've brought up; in order for me to best fight for the changes that you, our users, want, I need to understand on a fundamental level everything along the upgrade path. From understanding why you would upgrade away from an application that serves your needs to really putting myself in your shoes in regard to your workflows; the more i know the better.

If you'd like to talk more but would like to do so privately, feel free to reach out to me directly at r.risdon@techsmith.com and we can continue the conversation on there.

The page with prior versions is an excellent idea. I will continue using version 11 until Windows doesn't support it any longer. Like others in this thread I don't understand the changes in version 13 and I gave up trying.

BRT, if you have an old version, revert to it. I am using v11.4.1 and I am doing fine. After 2014, Techsmith did a real screwed up job with SnagIt. I am also tired of folks from SnagIt asking what is it that we want and they do not do nothing about it. Their forum is full of negative stuff about SangIT after some geniuses decided that we the consumers do not need certain features, so they took it out. I have been using SnagIt since it was a single digit version (for a lot of years) but have never seen a software go backwards in the features. SnagIt needs to learn about "Continuous Improvement"

I am hoping that one day someone at Techsmith will hear us, THE USERS that made the company succeed and put the productive features back and STOP screwing around with the software.

Does 11 output to Word 2013 or higher?
    0
  • cyrusmd

Yes version 11 has the profile, the profile that one would use is called " Insert into Word with border". That profile is under the category called " time saving profile". You can customize the profiles too.

  • dfrisken
But does the profile work for Word 2013 specifically?

  • Robert R.
    Hi dfrisken;

I just tested a Snagit 13.1.2 capture profile on Windows 10 that captured an image, saved it to the Editor, then upon clicking the "Finish" button successfully placed the capture in Microsoft Word 2013 (part of the Microsoft Office 2013 Professional desktop suite). The Word share output also sends an image from the Editor to the same Word 2013.

Were you looking for that sort of behavior, or were you looking for something different so that I might test it to see if there is an issue?
