    (cross-post from this thread)

Hi all and thanks for your patience with this particular request.

I've reached out to the development team and have some news surrounding the idea of cross-platform libraries in Snagit. This feature is currently in active development and while I'm excited to be able to share that bit of news, I'd like to point out that though it's actively being worked on, an eta for cross-platform libraries is not yet available; I understand that folks may want a firm date, however it would be irresponsible to do so. The last thing I would want is to say this feature will be ready on this date at this time, only to have it slip due to unforeseen circumstances. I can, though, say that we will begin beta-testing the feature sometime this Summer (which is rapidly approaching!) so be sure to follow this post!

    Thanks again for your patience!

    Hi Damian,

I am in the same boat and I have use set up Snagit screen capture to Share to a Dropbox folder which I have appropriately named Snagit. Under that folder, I have created a subfolder for each platform (macOS, Windows, ...). I authorized through Snagit to share to my Dropbox account and in the Snagit Dropbox setup (accessed by the gear icon) I set the default location and left the Ask for filename and location each time checked and the Shorten share link unchecked. Each time I perform a screen capture (at least on macOS) the top header banner of the screen capture window I click the Finish button. Voila! Snagit prompts you for the file name and saves it there as a .png.
You can do the same for other devices and other platforms (like Windows).
So, you are under trial??? Just plain buy Snagit - there is NUTHIN' BETTER on the market!!! Serious.

Hi Ken, unfortunately this is not the way I would like it to work. I save many many screenshots per day.. I want a transparent solution. Where when I open snagit on windows.. I can see the library with the same as in macos...

If you just want to share the datastore (or any folders) via dropbox, why not make a symlink into dropbox.?No extra space taken on your computer (more space on dropbox=yes)

I do this as part of my backup plan. Everything is linked into dropbox. For the windows side, here is a tutorial
    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

There is a utility that makes it super easy by adding to the right click context menu. I keep my right click menu clean, but this always has a place
Don't get confused His usitlity does all you could ever want with links, delorean links. Symlinks, Junctions and hard links are all that you will probably  ever use

The native file format for Snagit:Windows (.SNAG) and Snagit:Mac (.snagproj) are completely different AND platform specific. We've considered a common file format allowing customers to share a library between Mac and Windows on several occasions; and each time we've deferred the project because it requires multiple "man-years" of work to accomplish and we are not convinced the benefits outweigh the cost.

(NOTE: here when I refer to benefits vs cost, I mean not just the cost of implementation, but also the lost opportunity cost of not doing other things while we do that...)

So... all that having been said:  If any of our customers are interested in this ability I'd encourage you to hit the "me too" button and leave a comment explaining why its important to you.

Alternately, I encourage folks who are not interested in a common file format to please leave a comment to that effect as well.  (Understand that if we did this; it requires a lot of time and energy and prevents us from doing other things you might find more valuable...)

Unfortunately this doesn't solve my issue.

It is not something I need but would it not work to just develop the PSD format that will preserve layers? Currently Snagit does not export to this format and preserve the layers

If that is possible you might shoot the idea around to move to something like a  PSD format

    • Graphics programs can import it
    • A HOST of requests would vanish such as seeing a thumbnail in Windows Explorer et.
    • And a bunch I had on the tip of my tongue but forgot as I typed this
You could wrap up a BUNCH of user issues with this one thing
Alternately or better yet in addition: create a conversion utility to do this

    @Doug

Maybe, just separate the JPG capture from the annotations.. I could live with that I guess...

The project files are sometimes too big too..

But as per your reply it could take years for the feature to come. What do you think would be the best solution in the meanwhile? Is there a way to have a JPG copy of whatever file project is there in the library in dropbox automatically?

I am sure. Also trying to conform to PSD standard might open a can of worms.

At the end of the day, any format that is not the format(s) we are already using requires significant engineering resources to develop...

PSD is nice because it has layers - I don't know a lot of details about PSD so I can't say if its flexible enough for our usage. (we need to store new custom data from time to time to support new features)

... but, the moment you have multiple vendors using the same format but each adding custom "extensions" to the format - the ability of it to remain a common medium of interchange would begin to deteriorate...

Like Rick said: "can of worms"

    @Dam

    Good News
We are considering a partial solution to this problem, see: https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/snagit-feedback-feature-request-round-up  (Specifically: "Allow Snagit to be put on a network drive")

    Bad News
You want to not only share your library, but share it across platforms...  which (as we've been discussing here) isn't feasible short term.

Why am I telling you this? Because I'm concerned our partial solution won't meet the needs of a lot of people (not just you) and so maybe I could convince you to ask some pointed questions on the Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive thread...

I get it with PSD importing: how would you deal with grouped layers, various adjustment layers etc. A solution might be to tweak the EXPORT to PSD to respect the layers in snagit and post a dire warning that importing a PSD can be a crapshoot mess beyond your control

An idea only ... I would probably never need it but it would help with croll platform issues

Or a translation feature that reads the mac format and translates ot on a PC or vice versa

What happens on a network drive when the drive and datastore are unavailable? You can make a symlink across network drives for files. I just tried folders and am getting a permissions error that I do not have time to troubleshoot.

Here is the easiest to read

This needs to come to SnagIt. Please, please add platform agnostic library sync.

Snagit Mac and Snagit Windows need to be able to use a common file. I am very surprised this has never been the case. It would be like Word for Mac and Word for Windows could not use a common Word Document file.

Snagit Mac and Snagit Windows need to be able to use a common file. Please!
I work with a PC at work and with a Mac at home. losing the information form the Snagit-file by exporting the file to png-format gives me double work.

I'm sure Techsmith will do something for this. If nothing else I save as PNG in a Dropbox shared folder.

This would be very valuable, as in our company we use both Mac & PC and would like to be able to use the same files on both platforms, multiple computers.

  • Same here, it's a must for me.

If not a common format, at least make it so that both versions can 'import' the other Operating System's files.

"The native file format for Snagit:Windows (.SNAG) and Snagit:Mac (.snagproj) are completely different AND platform specific."

Well, thanks for the lengthy explanation, but this begs the question... what genius decided to make file formats different and platform specific? It wouldn't take man-years of effort if it had been better considered in the first place.

I work as a tech writer at a large enterprise company and we have some writers on PC and some on Mac. With SnagIt, we can't share project files. We would LOVE a common file type. Many headaches with the current situation.

Sitting on an airplane, I had blindly assumed I would be able to export my snagarchive from my PC and import on my Mac while I travelled and completed my project.  I literally have hundreds of images I need to sift through on this flight that are in the backup project. =(

I need it too because I work the same way others have described here. I can't believe it's that much effort to come up with a standard database format to share between mac and windows and very disappointed it's not done yet.

My business case is I need it and to to be blunt I will seek an alternative solution if I don't see it soon.  Been using SnagIt for many years and hate to give it up but I will be forced to.

I took would like to be able to access screenshots cross-platform.  I can have them sync with OneDrive, but being able to open them up is imperative.

TechSmith,  how many people have to ask before you pony up and do the right thing? It's 2021 - looking through the forums, people have been asking for cross-platform shared libraries since at least SnagIt version 9!
