    Hi there;

This isn't something that we've seen before. Are you using a USB webcam or the built-in Facetime Camera?

    The built-in camera.

This just happened to me again, but I'm on my work computer. It's also a Mac, but running Camtasia 3.0.4

This time it's a 21-minute recording and the webcam freezes at about 19:45.

    Still using the built-in camera.

Same problem.  I just recorded a 20 min video and my webcam froze from about the 10 minute mark until the 17 minute mark.

Same issue here.  Did a series of interviews, recording the screen with built in camera (macbook pro 2018) and in each interview, I lost about 1:30 where the camera froze and captured no audio.  The screen movements continued to be captured, so it's definitely just the built in web cam that's freezing.  It's not consistent when it happens - all the interviews were about 50-60 minutes long, and one froze at around 32 minutes, another around 40 minutes, another at around 51 minutes, but strangely all freezes appear to be be around 1:30 in length. Would love to know how to fix this, as Murphy's Law states all frozen audio will miss the most important thing the person has to say :-)

Camtasia gave me the following suggestions (Although, I haven't had a chance to record any long videos since implementing these steps so I can't say for sure whether it's fixed the problem or not)

1.) Close Camtasia and confirm its not running by accessing Activity Monitor. Look for Camtasia in the running list of applications.
2.) Click on your Finder and then click the Go menu at the top. Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and choose the Library item in the Go dropdown. Then go to Preferences.
3.) Locate all com.techsmith.camtasia.plist files and move them over to your trash.
4.) Confirm that com.techsmith.camtasia.plist is no longer in the Preferences folder, then empty your trash.
5.) Restart your computer, then re-launch Camtasia  to see if you get the same issues.

@tysonsahner - they gave me this advice too, and I tried it.  It solved the issue for the next 4 interviews I did, but in interview #5 the problem was back.  I can't be resetting stuff mid-day, and they respond to me like they've never heard of this issue before.  A colleague told me he never has problems like that running camtasia on some super cheap PC, which I wanted to avoid, but holes in my audio and losing the PIP camera images is unacceptable.  I should also note that their other suggestion was to upgrade to camtasia 2018, which I did, and the problem continues.

Same issue still, camera freezes half of the time and recordings go to trash, nothing on this?

Happening to me as well, sadly quite often. I now consider webcam unusable and have to do second recording on my phone, because webcam freezes. Would love to see a fix for this. Audio is still working.

Camtasia 2019.0.8, macOS 10.15.4 (19E287). Tried both integrated Facetime camera and integrated webcam from external screen, both freeze similarly. Happens at one point, audio and screen is being recorded, but webcam freezes at one frame and then unfreezes a few minutes later.

I would love to see this fixed, if I cannot rely on my recording software, it is not good. Even if Camtasia alerted me (by blinking the screen or something) that the webcam frame did not change for a while, it would be better than me thinking that all is fine and then realizing I have to do the whole project over again.

Same here (Camtasia 2019.0.8, macOS 10.15.4)!

I also have this problem on the current version of Camtasia (2019.0.9) on my 15 inch  MacBook Pro (2019 model). The webcam freezing seems to happen totally at random (and sometimes it unfreezes again after 5-10 minutes). This currently makes Camtasia unusable for me - so disappointing that they did not manage to fix this problem for so long!

Having this problem too with a 16in MBP and Camtasia 2020.0.4. I had it with an older MBP too and thought that upgrading my hardware it would go away...nope.

I'm also having this issue. It's very very frustrating and has made me regret purchasing Camtasia. It doesn't seem like tech support is doing anything to fix it as it's been an ongoing issue for quite awhile. Very frustrating.

I have been in contact with tech support about this for about a month and they do not seem to be able to do anything about it - even after three updates for Camtasia 2020 (which I now use). Currently, with this bug, Camtasia is just an unusable piece of software that I regret ever installing.

This has happened to me twice. And just happened twice to my wife as  well today. We are preparing lectures and this is making her switch to zoom instead.

We both use latest MacBookPro with FaceTime cam.

    Hi dorien.herremans

What version of Camtasia are you currently running? Is it Camtasia 2 as the original poster, or are you using a newer version?

Thanks for your reply Robert. It’s Camtasia 2020. Installed two weeks ago. Any other info I can give you?

    Hi Dorien;

If you're seeing this in Camtasia 2020 then it's likely best for our Support team to look at it; I've created a ticket that references this post and a Support agent should be reaching out to you to get it taken care of. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this and get you up and running sooner rather than later.

Same issue here. Worked fine for about 10-15 videos (average capture length was ~10 min), and now the webcam freezes sometime in the first 3 min, then unfreezes later, seemingly at random. Webcam track's audio capture is fine, exactly as described by others above. This is a body blow to my ability to produce engaging videos for my students, especially now that the school year has begun.

I have been running OSX's build-in Photo Booth app in the background while I record. I use it as a realtime webcam monitor (so I can see if I'm framed properly while I'm recording). Photo Booth's video signal doesn't freeze during recording. Not sure any of that matters, but it involves the webcam and the video card so I'm mentioning it.

Here's my question: within the "miscellaneous bugfixes" item of the release notes, have any of the last 5 releases of Camtasia included a "possible fix" to this issue? Because hey, if it's backlogged, that's fine, but I should probably get a refund and seek an alternative product if that's the case.

I'd be a little surprised you weren't hearing about this issue enough for it to be a priority, though. My configuration isn't exactly esoteric (unless all Macs are esoteric compared to your PC userbase):

    2020 MacBook Pro 13-inch

    OSX 10.15.6 (Catalina)

    Quad-Core Intel Core i5

    16 GB RAM

Build in webcam (Model ID: UVC Camera VendorID_1452 ProductID_34068)

    Camtasia 2020.0.6

    ---

Thanks for any attention you can afford to send in this issue's direction! I really love this product except for the part where it fails to do this one crucial thing!

I have the exact same problem with my USB cam attached to my MacBook Pro. So, is not a built in webcam problem only.

years of reporting, and still no fix?! That is seriously disappointing!

Happened to me today for the first time. I was using an external USB Camera. Camtasia 2020 and Big Sur. So not the Facetime camera. Also it seems to take ages to start or stop recording.
