Something new this way comes
Hi gang
I've been hanging around these forums for a while now and trying to help when and where I am able. And in the time I've spent here, I've noticed that there is all sorts of help available for our screencasting adventures. Kayakman has gobs of videos he has created. Lon Naylor has other videos. There are sometimes simple forum post threads that offer useful advice. And so on and so on.
The main problem is that while all this information exists, it's in many different places with no main focal point to find it. Some is on ScreenCast.com, some is on YouTube, some here in the Get Satisfaction forum, and even more generically found via Google searches.
Today, I'm very pleased to publicly announce a new and completely free resource I've created that will hopefully assist us all in more easily locating information we need to help one another out. This is attempting to help average users as well as those of us trying to help support Camtasia.
I've constructed a site and have a domain name pointing to it. The site name is MOACR.com. And the link is: http://www.moacr.com
I'm hoping we all find it to be a useful resource. It's been a few months in the making. (There are presently 471 HTML content pages inside it waiting to be explored, exploited, whatever.)
The site is completely free for anyone to find and use with no obligation whatsoever. Note that you will encounter PayPal donation buttons for anyone so inclined as to assist with hosting and domain name fees down the road. If you choose to donate, that's awesome! But feel free to totally ignore them as donations aren't the main focus of the site. The main focus is to provide easy to find help.
There is also a feedback page with a clickable email link to reach me for things you would like to see, issues you have found, etc. Please know that I'm open to suggestions and whatever feedback you may have.
As you can imagine, this is going to be an evolving thing. More content will be added as it is found and requested and the site will undergo changes as needed and time permits.
So go check it out and I hope you all enjoy the site!
Cheers... Rick :)

Hey Rick, nice resource site! If you need more Camtasia videos, you may want to also check out my channel. I have quite a few training videos there for Camtasia.

Appreciate the links. I'll work on getting those added in.

Rick, this looks great! Thanks for providing this great resource. As you can imagine, this is going to be an evolving thing. More content will be added as it is found and requested and the site will undergo changes as needed and time permits.
Can you please clarify the process for adding material, resources, links? Are you just going to scan the posts here, and pick up stuff, or should we notify you somehow?
It would also be great if we could sign up for notifications for new and changed topics on your MOACR site.
Thanks.0 -
Wow Rick, you really did it! This addresses the scattershot nature of resources. In addition to what you find, I think for your sanity (besides you also have a job, etc.) that people should notify you of submissions they believe would help the cause. 0 -
Hmmm, I hadn't really given any thought to the notification process. I'll have to ponder that one and see what I can come up with. Heaven knows I'm personally deluged with mail on a daily basis. So I didn't really ponder any immediate notification of new things. I suppose I could create a page listing the latest content. That would be fairly simple to do. Would that work?
On the site is a contact link that allows you to send email to my personal account. If you see something that should be in the system and isn't, it would be great if you could use that info and send me a message alerting me to the resource.
Generally speaking, I do tend to try and watch the forum for information and I also scan YouTube and other places for information. Nothing automated. Just what one would see by opening YouTube and searching. But as anyone knows, they are but only one person and one person can only tackle so much on their own. ;)
Cheers... Rick :)0 -
Yep, and I think the email links are the way to fly. That way I can filter them to a specific folder to keep better track of them. 0 -
Nice job Rick! 0 -
Okay, I've received a bit of feedback from someone and I feel that I should post this openly.
An excerpt from the feedback I received was this:
...Someone pointed out to me that with the Donate button on this site, on every page, you would be making a profit off of the original creators’ source material...
And here was my response to this individual:
Hmmm, I hadn't really thought about that.
I'd dearly love to report to you that I see $50,000 each week from those buttons and by golly I'd love nothing more than to share with you!
What I can and will openly and sadly tell you is that I've been running a similar site for several years. The other site I operate is called RoboWizard.com. And in all the time I've been running it, I have yet to see enough folks hit that donate button that it's a struggle to even break even on the domain name fees alone, let alone the hosting fees which are at least 5x the domain fees. (That likely explains why that aspect never crossed my mind)
So if anyone believes I'd be getting rich off things like this, they are very sadly and sorely mistaken. In all the years I've been running the RoboWizard site, I think I've seen perhaps a total of five donations. It's been an interesting observation of human behavior. In one of the donation cases, (this happened this past summer) I was later approached by the person that made the donation saying that because they donated, they expected and demanded personal attention and private help! (I do contract with folks on the other site to assist with things, and I normally charge anywhere from $35-$50 per hour) Now as it turned out, I would have helped them anyway, the donation made no difference. But they did end up getting a couple of hours of my time for the bargain price of $5. LOL But that's just me being me. I'm a horrible business person!
I might consider and better understand the apprehension warranted if I were charging a fee for anyone to use the site. But as I said in my GetSatisfaction post, I actually encouraged folks to totally ignore the donation areas. Not the behavior one might expect for someone seeking to become wealthy, eh? ;)
I also note that the stuff you have that I'd be pointing at is on YouTube. And I know that YouTube often places advertising on their site before they show videos and they collect from the advertising. So it's curious to me why someone would be concerned about something they have created possibly benefiting a fellow user as opposed to a massive corporation. But I digress.
Having said that, if you look, you will notice that many of the pages share an eerily "common look and feel". And that's not by accident. The tool I used to create and that I will be using to maintain the site makes it an easy task to compose the pages as I want.
So how about this? Should I decide to create pages that point to any of your stuff, I'd be happy to create those pages so they do not include the donate button. Would that be more palatable?
Or I'd even be happy to take it a step further and offer to put a donate button that points to your own PayPal account for pages I'd create that point to your stuff. And in that case, your donations would actually be received as a result of my own sweat and labor! Where else would you find a deal like that? LOL
The words I wrote to this person are also what I want to impart to anyone else reading this. If my site points to any material you have personally created and you don't wish to have the donation links visible on the page pointing to your material, just let me know and I'll be happy to remove them. And I'll even offer to go the extra mile and make the same general offer of placing links to your very own PayPal account if you wish.
Cheers... Rick :)0 -
I've made a small adjustment to the way things work based on your suggestion. ;) 0 -
Rick, I'm not concerned about how much you receive in donations. That is up to each visitor to your site.
My biggest objection is that it is distracting and obscures the content by being at the TOP of EVERY page.
Perhaps you could reduce the donation text to a simple button, and put it either at the bottom of the either the content pane or the control panel on the left. Just move it from the top of the content pane.
Thanks.0 -
ROFL, ingenious small adjustment. I let out a good loud chuckle! 0 -
LOL, I love laughter! The idea hit me late last night.
I have participated in many different forum type venues over the years. And in one particular venue, I would notice this one person that would always end his posts with "ask me about the monkey".
And for a long while, I just thought it was a funny quip. Then, like a small twig that gets stuck in your sandals, it eventually got the better of me and I contacted him privately to ask what the deal was about the monkey! And he advised me that it was a technique he used to engage with people. I loved it!
Cheers... Rick :)0 -
