    Hello!

I just wanted to pop into this thread to give an update on virtual camera utility/support in Camtasia as we've just released Camtasia 2022 and we have added official support for various virtual camera utilities! If you're curious to see what virtual camera utilities Camtasia 2022 officially supports / has been tested with, then feel free to head on over to our compatibility page as we've listed them there.

That's not all, though, as we've also added a whole host of other features and fixes and you can read up on them in our Version History page (Windows can be found here, Mac can be found here).

Not sure if you're covered under an active maintenance agreement or have access to Camtasia 2022? Head on over to your Account Page and sign in with the account that purchased/registered the software, then check the "My Products" tab- if you're covered under a maintenance agreement then you should see a download link for Camtasia 2022 as well as its software key. If you're not currently covered by a maintenance agreement, then we encourage you to download and try Camtasia 2022's trial to see if it's a good fit for you!

Feel free to reach out to me here or if you're running into an issue, please be sure to contact our Support team. If you haven't already and you're running into issues with this, then feel free to let me know here and I can quickly open a ticket for you or you're welcome to click on the "Support" bubble found in the lower right corner of the Community pages.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jeff,

    Absolutely!!

You have some motion backgrounds in your Camtasia library - right within the software.

Or, you can go to our Assets page and look under VIDEO for more. We have a good selection of free options there. These can be used without copyright issues.

    https://library.techsmith.com/camtasia/assets/Videos/MotionBackground

    I hope this helps!

Thanks Kelly...very nice and cool but I need a virtual background like an training room or conference room with motion. Can I import pictures into Camtasia and use them that way? If not I guess I'll record in Zoom and import into Camtasia.

I just imported the background I like when using Zoom into my Media Bin in Camtasia. Is there a way to make that my background when recording myself with my camera? I Plan on doing split screen...one half the screen will be my PowerPoint and the other half will be me doing training.

After you've completed your Camtasia recording, you can edit it to add a background - maybe use track matte. However I'm not aware of a trick to add the background While you are recording.

Any way you slice it, a green screen background is the only good option I'm aware of with Camtasia.
Keyed out in post, then the backgrounded added.
There is no live recording background replacement options. As already stated.

Ahhh... yes, WHILE you are recording... Typically you do need the green screen to pull this off. However, you can you use any plain background while you are recording... like a plain PPT slide. Then, you can record yourself on your webcam and put that in Camtasia. Since the background is white, you can add any motion video in the background.

OR, if you have a plain wall that is well lit so the color remains consistent without a lot of shadows, you can record your webcam in front of that, then make that wall transparent in Camtasia, and put the motion video on the timeline to fill the transparency.

OR, you can add the motion video to the timeline, add your webcam video, crop it down, and put a track matte over it to cut down on how much background you can see.

OR, you can record yourself on Zoom.

Let us know if you need more help getting the look you need.

Thanks Kelly! I don't want motion in the background as I feel it will be distracting from the training I'm doing.  I need to look like I'm in a training room,  conference room or even perhaps on a stage.  I want half the screen to be me and the other half to be my PowerPoint.

This is a real shame - the ZOOM virtual backgrounds (and touch up my appearance features) are fabulous and I'm getting them for free with Zoom!

Enhancement Request, please add "zoom like" virtual backgrounds to camtasia, that would definitely convince me to purchase an upgrade.

I agree with Dario. I just purchased Camtasia, hoping that it would have the technology that Zoom and Webex have regarding the virtual background. I need to add it as I am recording it, not use a chroma key afterwards. So, I bought the program but I am going to end up recording in Zoom or Webex instead of Camtasia. :(

This isn't intended in any way to be a slam, but just a totally curious question.

I see this often here in the TechSmith forums. Folks advising everyone that they plopped their money down and purchased software only to discover that after they purchased and installed, it doesn't do what they expected or wanted.

What I'm curious about is why there seemed to be no effort put forth in downloading and installing and kicking the tires on the trial version? Seems to me that by doing that, you would have saved yourself the anguish of possibly having to ask for a refund.

Is there some belief that the trial version won't be the same as what you get in the end?

I'm sure TechSmith would love to know the answer to that as well.

    Cheers... Rick :)

Rick, I totally understand what you mean. I have used Camtasia for years for my college classes. Only recently did I have to purchase it myself. When I was teaching face to face courses I never had occasion to need to key out the background at all. So I just went ahead and purchased it since I had worked with it (and LOVE it) for so long. I take total responsibility for not realizing that it did not have this function. It was my mistake for not checking. It's just a plain fact that I need that function now. If I didn't need that function I would be using it religiously. Again, I absolutely love Camtasia and Techsmith.

Now we sit at 16 months since I asked Techsmith to look into the Zoom-like virtual green screen. Unfortunately, they still choose to ignore this vital feature for Camtasia. Why won't Techsmith act on this?

Techsmith even wiped out the Camera control features in the new Camtasia 2021 version. Fortunately, there was a workaround with the Legacy tool.

10 months ago... I posted this:

I too asked for this Zoom-like virtual background about 6 months ago in a phone call to a Techsmith representative. She stated that my suggestion would be added to the list of possible Camtasia improvements. We will see if they add this function. Nothing yet...

About a year ago, I called and asked for Fuse to be fixed as well (you have to go to the Fuse library to delete an image before you can take another picture). That has not been addressed either. Unfortunately, I have had to do a Microsoft Office Lens to Onedrive to Snagit workaround. It isn't as seamless as the Fuse to Snagit link used to be for me.

I don't make the statements above to slam TechSmith. Just like the gentleman above, I love Snagit and Camtasia (Jing too, until Flash became a bad thing to use). But like any company, it must keep up with their customer requests and feature desires, or those same paying customers are forced to check into alternatives...

    Hello Jeff,

The best practice I found is by downloading Xsplit Vcam software then choosing that as a "hardware" in camtasia recorder camera options.

I hope that help. Keep creating useful content!

Unfortunately XSplit VCam is not available for Mac, Camtasia doesn't have the virtual background feature, so the only option for Mac users today is to use a green screen, or record using zoom and only using camtasia for editing.

Pretty unhappy with camtasia for not having this essential feature today.

Have a look at ManyCam which also has a virtual background feature and is Mac and Windows compatible.

Today is 13 Jan. 2021. I posted the message below 4 months ago, after calling TechSmith about it 6 months prior to this post - now 10 months total, but TechSmith will not state if they are working on such a feature for Camtasia. I wish they would let us know! If other companies can do it, why can't they do it for customers who are paying, and keep paying, for their product(s)? [Note: Fuse still isn't fixed either - very frustrating!]

    Hi Dr. Jeff Ulmer;

Thank you for following up on the feature request. I understand it can be frustrating when a tool you use doesn't possess the features that you need/want.

I do wish I had better news on the topic, however I can say that there are no immediate plans to implement virtual backgrounds as seen in other applications. While this is an interesting concept/idea, our priorities are focused elsewhere at this time. That may change in the future, however if/when that may happen is not something we'd be able to estimate at this time.

    Hello, Robert at TechSmith.

Thank you for replying to our comments on virtual backgrounds. At least we know now that TechSmith has no plans to create such a feature in Camtasia. This provides us, your user base, with a definitive response and helps us to decide if we wish to find a Camtasia alternative that may have virtual background capability.

You did not comment Fuse. Does TechSmith plan to get the picture-taking app fixed to where it does not retain a picture in cue after a picture has already been uploaded to Snagit? The only way I resolved this issue was to go manually into the Fuse library, delete the image, and then I could take another picture for uploading to Snagit. This is very cumbersome and time-consuming. That is why I switched to Scanner Pro for this feature (one more app that was not developed/maintained by TechSmith).

    Thank you.

    Jeff

    Hi Dr. Jeff Ulmer;

My apologies on the Fuse portion; it slipped past me and I didn't intend to ignore it; since this is a Camtasia-focused thread, I'd like to open a support ticket so we can discuss the issues further (welcome to update the thread with any relevant information to the primary topic, but we'll want to keep on point). Would you be okay with me opening a ticket for you so we can discuss Fuse?

Are there any news regarding virtual background feature? It seems this is not in Camtasia 2021, right? Any chance of this making its path into 2022 maybe? Or there are still no plans to add this feature?

Camtasia is still missing the virtual background capability. Very frustrating. While the green screen works great with Camtasia, I want quick video creation capability using a virtual background tool. The less time I spend editing a video is more time to develop student content.

On another note, I'm attempting to use Xsplit Vcam with Snagit to record one-off quick videos for my students, with the videos being quickly uploaded to Screencast.com for student dissemination - this part works great! Kudos to Techsmith! Unfortunately, Xsplit Vcam doesn't remove the background with a desktop view within Snagit as its virtual camera, but at least I can add a blurred background to make it work.

OBS can be configured with Xsplit Vcam to do what I want but I'd like to stay with Techsmith products. Are you listening Techsmith???

Yes, I'd like to see this function too.  It's very frustrating that Snagit cannot do backgrounds for webcams.

We all want the virtual background. Get on it TechSmith.

I agree with everyone else. In this day and age, the background feature is an industry-accepted norm. I would see this as a priority given the amount of interest in this chat alone.

Since I bought a high quality webcam, I also need the the background feature. Please let us know if and when we can get it. This would have been a great feature for the 2021 version. I feel like Camtasia has mostly added useless features during the past 2-3 years, instead of releasing something new. Do not get me wrong, I like and recommend the software, but virtual background would be just a great and useful feature. Thanks in advance.
