Which folder? It's pretty unlikely that a crash would/could delete your files... so we should be able to find what you lost.

    Hi Paul,

The folder was in my Math Folder in Icloud Drive. It was called either Algebra or ALGEBRA

Here is the case of the deletion , i recorded a direct scenario for it

This is your project, then, that disappeared?

I think you might want to contact our Support staff to get their direct help on finding the folder.
But, searching your mac for ".cmproj" may turn it up. By default we save into your ~/Movies/Camtasia 2019/ folder.

Exact same issue here.  Camtasia crash earlier tonight and then POOF the ENTIRE folder with ALL of my media for a project - not just the .cmproj file, but EVERYTHING - gone just like that.  Thank goodness I had a complete backup elsewhere or I would have lost MANY DAYS of work.  I think Camtasia has a bug here that the developers should be aware of and address.  Next time I might not be so lucky.

This is with Camtasia 2020 on the Mac, btw

Could be an issue with external drives maybe?  I know the Camtasia exporter has an issue with saving files to external drives - maybe related?  But it should be realized that this, when it occurs, is the most catastrophic possible bug since IT DELETES ALL OF YOUR FILES.

I would not use an external drive with Camtasia for both performance reasons and because it could cause files to appear missing in your project when the drive comes and goes.
However, I think it is extremely unlikely that Camtasia would delete a folder full of your media. There's just... nothing in there that tries to delete folders all around your system. The only thing Camtasia may delete is a recording from your "Temporary Recordings" folder if it is not used in a project.

I'm not trying to dodge blame here- I'm telling you this because I don't want you to lose more data and the culprit is still at large ;)

I use standalone projects in Camtasia for this very reason - so that all of the media is held within the project and I don't have to worry about having the source files available elsewhere when editing.  As to not using external drives - the drive I have in question is a Samsung NVMe external SSD with massive read/write performance, comparable to the mac's own internal SSD ... so no performance issues.  Not everyone has sufficient space on their internal drives for large projects.  This is why we have reliable, high-performance external drives and filesystems.

As far as what happened - all I know is that Camtasia crashed (happened when copying / pasting portions of a media trackl from one project to another), and five seconds later I noticed that I no longer had the ENTIRE folder that had my large Camtasia project in it - nor was anything in the Trash.  It was just gone, poof, like it never existed.  Initially the disk showed as no more space freed up - but about 30 minutes or so later, the disk space showed as free again by the exact amount of what was lost.

Like I say, thank goodness I had a backup.

Rather than dismissing this, I do think the Camtasia developers should seriously investigate what is going on, since as per this thread you now have three problem reports with basically identical symptoms in the last four months.  I too am amazed that _any_ crash could cause files to so neatly and completely be deleted - I don't understand how that could happen, and was shocked when it did - but facts are facts.  Not everyone is going to be as lucky as I was to have a complete and recent backup.

Don’t know what to tell you unfortunately. Same thing happened to me. Camtasia tech support could not explain it. I only recovered it from a backup.

i just uploaded a video of the case direct steps to reproduce, this might be a one scenario of many but at-east i think the dev team can debug the case from here, i love this product and i am willing to provide the team of any info so they can tackle this issue

Guys i worked as quality engineer for 3 years before converting to iOS development, i spent the night trying to reproduce this bug and i found a direct scenario , i will upload the steps in short time , i recovered some data in Time Machine thanks Apple for that , i will post the steps shortly , just wanted to say something here i have been also a software engineer for years now never seen a case like this case, its simply is a disaster and needs to be fixed , from my point of view you should raise this ti be a blocker issue and this should stop all development pipe lines to be fixed!!!

This looks to be (or at least I hope this is) 100% reproducible per the video.  This appears quite close to what I was doing just before Camtasia crashed on me - dragging media between two files, BOOM crashed, and then all of my entire folder gone - all files - just like you can see in the video.

Camtasia developers - PLEASE move fixing this issue to the very top of your development priorities.  I agree and reiterate that this is a DISASTER for anyone using Camtasia when it happens.  Having to stop every (say) 30 to 60 minutes to make (yet another) complete backup of my project is a big drag on productivity.  I agree that this certainly looks like some sort of script or recursive delete (rm -r *) that is happening - you can see the files go away in the video right after the issue occurs.

Watching this video, here, really there is no denying that a problem - and a big one - exists.  Fix it, please!

Update on this- thanks to anas almomany, we believe we have found the cause and fixed it, and are testing now to get a fix out ASAP. It seems a very edge case - you have to have an untitled project open when you crashed, and opened Camtasia by clicking another project in Finder - but it's a TERRIBLY SEVERE one. Will let you know when we have the update available.

    Hi all!

As Paul mentioned yesterday we were able to find the cause, get it fixed, and finally tested. With the testing complete we just pushed the update live and you can grab Camtasia 2020.0.4 here: https://www.techsmith.com/download/camtasia/

Feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions or concerns, and thanks again!

I did the exact same thing, but I lost the ENTIRE folder where the camtasia file was saved. This was the most important folder on my Mac. Luckily I have a backup from a few days ago, but Camtasia crashed earlier in the evening. And when I came back to it, the entire folder was gone. This is insane, and why was this update only pushed for Camtasia 2020? I have Camtasia 2019 and don't have the maintenance plan. So that means Techsmith KNEW this was a problem but didn't fix it for the 2019 version. That is so screwed up.

Have just had the same issue. Camtasia crashed and the entire contents of my project folder was wiped. How can I recover this date and ensure it doesn't happen again, TechSmith?

I just hit this on a tight deadline project on same-day created files on Mac.  Had to pay over $100 to EaseUS to recover these files on a T2 Chip encrypted mac volume.

I have been on the latest available 2019 version for months (2019.0.9 109647).

Please Note: Mine did not appear to crash - it happened by simply dragging a screenshot from the built-in OS screenshot utility into the clip bin.

I recently upgraded to 2019 and it is really disgraceful that TechSmith does not bug fix 2019 for this problem and it is not fun to have to buy additional software to make up for the lack of quality on such a destructive bug!

What exactly would qualify for a reason to fix a version so many people will be on for quite some years (we can't all upgrade every year).

My entire folder was gone with same issue. Is there any way to recover?

I was able to recover the majority of a folder using Disk Drill Pro and actually didn’t lose much work (just lots of time wondering wtf Cantasia had done with my folder haha). I think I then just had to relink a few audio and image files.
As a tip, make sure you never have an unsaved project open at the same time as a saved project. I think that was what caused the folder to be deleted during a crash. Hope that helps!
