Just installed Camtasia 2021 today. It still does NOT recognize camrec files from previous versions of Camtasia. It is so inconvenient from a long-term user point of view.

For anybody like me who downloaded yesterday (Wed, Apr 28th, 2021) and is on Windows:

A new Windows build released a few hours ago. 2021.0.1

By default Camtasia only checks for updates every 14 days.

In the Preferences > Advanced tab, I just set mine to check daily. With all the changes on the new version, it's normal to have incremental releases every week or two as issues are resolved.

It could be a day or three, or multiple weeks, but in the early stages they could be more often than 14 days.

Running such a early version is always a tradeoff.

I also like to know what has changed so I decide if the update fixes an issue important to me, or wait a bit, so I check these pages before updating. I've already updated to .0.1 a few min ago. (Running a 0.0 release is always almost a beta release, since they don't know about a ton of  issues until it's out in the wild on thousands of additional desktops.)

In case you want to check what has updated:

So you thought it would be a great idea to not allow writing on the screen while recording. This is USELESS.

    Screenflow just got another customer.

    @ Frédéric LE GUEN ...

Legacy Recorder on Windows 10 it is at

    C:\Program Files\TechSmith\Camtasia 2021\LegacyCamRecorder.exe

launch it and pin to task bar

It's 2021 and while stylish captions are everything in marketing, still left out of Camtasia "2021". So dumb.

    Hi Frédéric LE GUEN

The legacy recorder can be found in the folder where Camtasia is installed.

    Here's how to find it:

    https://youtu.be/zW21hmADqQw

Someone suggested renaming the default recorder .exe file something else and naming the legacy one as the default one and then Camtasia will launch the old one when you press 'Record' in the interface, but I have not tried this.

    Hope this helps.

Quite unfortunate that Techsmith is not addressing the captions/subtitle feature.
For how long will we wait for such an essential upgrade to the Captioning experience?

    Just give us positioning. ONLY.

Forgive me if this is not the right place, I'm running 2018 since a while and thought about moving to a more recent version, hence I'm wondering if there is any upgrade options to jump from 2018 to 2021

    thank you,

    yves

Hello ylouis and thanks for stopping by!

The question of upgrade paths is indeed quite relevant and fits on this Post well enough, thanks! You do indeed have a discounted upgrade path coming from a previous version of Camtasia. You can make a purchase on our Store thought this link. You're also welcome to download the Camtasia 2021 trial if you'd like to give it a spin before you purchase; you can download the trial here!

Feel free to reach back out if you have any questions or feedback!

Upgraded from Camtasia 9 to 2021.  The new version is a bit of a machine eater. I'm using a 4th gen i7 dual core (4 virtual cores) 16GB laptop that I recorded probably 20 videos with Camtasia 9.   I'm not convinced the same machine is usable with 2021 and will try my quad-core later this week. Maybe the machine requirements are different now and I didn't check?

I created and deleted several clips while testing the audio and video sync and got to a point where I'd get the grey "you have to wait while I catch up" screen multiple times.  It can really get bogged down with the controls or get confused I also had a situation where it was not possible to stop the playback in the editing screen after recording.  I had to let it play all the way through.

    Hi Joe

Here is a page with the minimum and recommended system requirements for 2021:

    https://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-system-requirements.html

In my experience, whenever I've had 'freezes' that the audio kept playing and the video was stopped was because it was accessing the disk - saving, copying, etc. With 2021 now and the standalone projects feature, as soon as you add a new clip to your project and save, Camtasia makes a copy of it inside the standalone project. That could take time if you press SAVE and also play it, or if you are already playing and press SAVE.

What I recommend is a SSD drive. I also have freezes when I save to external/USB drives. Disk access is costly.

Something weird is going on with batch production. Normally I would go in there and select a tscproj file and click open and that would be it - that project would be added to the batch list immediately. Now when I select one, it treats it as if it's a folder and "goes into it" and shows the source files for the project along with another identically named tscproj file which you can choose. It's a bit weird.

Thinking "what if I select two tscproj files - then surely it can't go into both" - right, it didn't, it just went into the first and ignored the second. Weird.

Hi @deedee, are those projects ‘standalone projects’ by chance? If so, they are in fact folders. This is the way the standalone projects are organised in 2021. The actual tscproj is in fact inside. That’s why ‘opening’ it goes inside because for the OS, that is a folder.

Graphicious Yes, standalone projects. Actually, what type of project would not be a standalone project?

    Awesome, thank you

You said " You're also welcome to download the Camtasia 2021 trial if you'd like to give it a spin before you purchase; you can download the trial here! "

Can I still use my 2018 version in parallel ?

    thank yoyu, yves

BTW - One annoying detail, that would be nice to get into the "please refine" bucket.

I ALWAYS detach the timeline from the main window, and I work on a set of videos at a time.

Sometimes I cycle through a set of them, fixing/adjusting a detail that is similar across the set of videos, but Camtasia doesn't remember my window placement.

Each time Camtasia opens a new video (tscproj file), it resets the main window to take over most of the screen, when the last video I had the main window sized down, and the timeline below it, and the Canvas off on another screen.

It would be nice for Camtasia to retain the Window layout when you have it set up as three independent windows. It always resets the main window to almost full size.

Not the end of the world, it's a one-click adjustment, but I have to do it every time.

Plus each time I open the program, I have to detach the timeline.

Would be nice to have a "remember Window placement" type option, including timeline. Multiple screens, 4k monitors are not uncommon for those of us working on training videos regularly. Remembering the last setup would be a quality win.

I understand fixing bugs is a higher priority, this is a "quality of life" issue, not a bug, but it would help.

    Hi ylouis

You can indeed! You can have Camtasia 2018 and Camtasia 2021 installed at the same time, though you would not be able to open Camtasia 2021 projects in Camtasia 2018 so that is something to keep in mind.

Feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

    Hi DBaarns

Thank you for the feedback! I'll be sure to pass your feedback over to our dev team for their consideration- I can't promise that it'll make it in, but we're always interested in hearing feedback and user workflows; thank you!

When doing a batch production I'm offered the list of presets in the dropdown menu - I'll never in my life want to build with a smart player so I'd like to remove them:

I can go into the folder where they live and delete them, but when I start or finish Camtasia (yes, both) it has a habit of rebuilding them back there. They come back from the dead to haunt me. Sure it's a trivial thing I admit that, but I managed to delete them on Camtasia 9 and 2020 without them coming back.

    The list mentions:

    • Added New Animation Shortcuts / Behaviors

but I'm not sure what that means or where it is. I looked at all the shortcuts in Preferences but didn't find anything there. I also looked in the Menus, Tools for both Animations and Behaviors, Properties Panel for each Behavior, and the list of shortcuts on the web but still can't find what this means. Is it in relation to the Mac feature of auto animate? Any direction you can provide would be appreciated. 😊

I just ran into the same problems everyone else is having with the recorder and I'd like to tell you: The options you removed are NOT "advanced options". They are run of the mill configuration settings that we all use!

It's all made much worse because you reset the options to the defaults, so the very first thing we do is search for a way to set things the way we expect, and then find out there's no way to do so (other than to use the old recorder, which you clearly knew we'd need to do, otherwise why include it in the installation?)

What the hell? Who in their right mind would think this is acceptable?  This is a serious product management fail. Releasing a new version too early just to make an arbitrary deadline is one of the capital sins of product management.

    Brooks, Robert,

Why is this in production with the new recorder that's caused all this frustration? And then people panic. I wonder how many fought through their panic and ended up at this forum where they can learn about the legacy recorder vs. the number of people who are irritated and still don't know the legacy recorder can be retrieved.

And the new recorder is going to changed in upcoming months.

    This is awful User eXperience.

    Also:

    • The countdown doesn't show.
    • The recorder doesn't get out of the way, it's gotta be manually dragged away.

Personally, I would rather not get any new features if it means avoiding these major disruptions to my workflow.

    gmagana, I agree.

Something is wrong in product management. This never should have seen the light of day until it was corrected. It shouldn't be on the consumer to be part of such a significant stop-gap measure while waiting for the real thing to come through.

I also see that I have to re-do my custom export settings.

    Hi,

I have discovered a problem with the menu Extend Frame (Ctrl + E). I can't indicate the time I want to add. It's always be default 1 sec.

I have done the test on 2 different projects with the same issue

I can conform the extend frame/duration issue; suggest you formally report as a possible bug ...

So I’ve of two minds on the recorder. On the one hand, I understand the frustrations of customers who lament that this enhancement wasn’t held back until it was fully ready to go live. I think that this dialogue should continue to exist and it’s something TechSmith should consider for V.2022, 2023, and so on.

I would also add that the ability to give my recording a file name is a non-negotiable item, so I’ll be using the Legacy recorder until that functionality makes its way back into the V.2021 recorder.

On the other hand, I work for a software company, and my experience tempers my reaction and leaves me with the following thoughts:

Timeline | In my experience, Product Management and/or Development do not set the timelines. They help guide and build the product to each enhancement, and I’m sure they have a voice in what items are ready to release. But the idea that it’s solely on PM/Dev is a bit unfair. I imagine TechSmith’s sales, legal, and finance departments, if not the C-suite, help create the timeline for the release cycle. Also, for better or worse, TechSmith Maintenance is a product, of sorts, that provides value to the customer and generates revenue for TechSmith, so the April release date for Camtasia strikes me as a hard deadline.

Waterfall vs. Agile | To be clear, I’ve no insider knowledge of how or why TechSmith does what they do, beyond what they’re comfortable sharing with the public and/or beta testers. But it does seem that more and more software vendors are moving towards an agile product release cycle in which smaller, quicker projects are handled in “sprints” vs. taking 2-3 years to build out a completely new product.
The benefit of agile is it allows teams to iterate content/product quicker and get feedback on it.

Minimum Viable Product | I imagine that they felt that the enhanced recorder met the conditions of a “minimum viable product;” i.e., they felt it had enough of a feature set/stability to release to the public. If they hadn’t provided the legacy recorder, I’d feel much differently about it, but I’m happy to use the Legacy recorder until the v.2021 is up to snuff.

    Just my two cents.

I've just gotten around to trying the 2021 Recorder (I just hadn't needed to capture in the last week) and all I can say is how shocking it is that it's reverted to being the simplest recorder you can have. First thing I (and probably most people) wanted to do was change where the recordings were being saved - nope, not possible. That's not an advanced option - it's as basic as things get. I'm glad I still have 2020 installed in parallel. I just deleted the shortcut to the 2021 version, I'll never want to use that one.

    Hi Daniel;

Can you please confirm that you are running Camtasia 2021.0.1? You can check the version of Camtasia by going to Help - About Camtasia. If you are still running Camtasia 2021.0.0 then you can update to the latest by downloading this installer. Once updated, please launch Camtasia 2021 and see if you are still running into the issue.
