SnagIt 2022 Wrong file format while 'save as' - always .snagx
New version always uses the .snagx format when I save a file. The 2022 version right now doesn't use the 'last used' format, for example .jpg. Pls fix!!
-
You can "Save as" and choose your format but the thumbnail in the library will always have the ".snagx" extension. These thumbnails, when double clicked don't open the file you "Saved as" either.

I open in the editor and save to a variety of folders. It adds an extra step to change the file to jpg in the editor because the editor defaults to snagx. Also would like a way to set the file type in All-In-One. The old capture was much easier, less steps. Furthermore, if I forget to manually change the file name and try to save as snagx to manually selected folder, I get an error message that it didn't save and the whole thing locks up for about 2 mintues.

Apart from the above I have the problem that my Canon printer does not recognize the .snagx format and refuses to print the captured image. To make matters worse, Snagit 2022 has converted all my images stored in the library to the new .snagx format.
Very ennoying too that, after having saved the image as .jpg or .png (as I used to do), the image shows twice in the recent captures tray. Very confusing!
So I support wb1's suggestion to use the "last used format" as a standard for every next saving of an image. For this moment I will return to Snagit 2021 until a solution will be available.

Well Bob Doorgeest, if you save as an alternate format, that's the file you will have to print. It appears that ".snagx" files are simply Snagit datastore files. They are not a recognized image format. I too always save as a ".jpg" or "png" file format and, yes, having two images in the "Recent captures" tray is a little confusing but, the "Save as" file has an indicator on it to show the file format. That file will print.

Totally confused. I don't want a special Snagit format. I simply want to capture screenshots and save a JPG. I have searched and tried a variety of things but it keeps returning to Snagit.
In addition, the 'delete from library' accessed from right clicking on picture(s) is gone. I keep my library clean because the program slows down if there are too many pictures. I just directly access my captures from my file folders.
So my two questions are
- how to simply save files as JPG
- how to delete from library
In the meantime I will go back to 2021 until these bugs are fixed.

After you "Save as", either from the "File" menu or by the use of "Ctrl+Shift+S", you can right click the ".snagx" file in the library and "Delete." This only removes the ".snagx" file. Your saved image is intact wherever you saved it. And remember that the saved file will also appear temporarily in the "Recents tray" as a duplicate as shown in my post above, so don't delete that one by right-clicking on it in the tray as that will delete it from your device. I know it adds steps as opposed to having Snagit automatically save to the last used format but it works. I've commented elsewhere about some of the other short comings of this version, one of which I haven't offered yet is the inability to "Tag" files other than ".snagx" files. I have stated in another thread that the only really good thing with this version is cloud storage of the datastore. Now I don't have to update all my devices independantly. What I add to one is added to all and what I remove from one is removed from all. And, if you make use of cloud storage, the "Saved as" files are also available everywhere whether you use OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or whatever. Snagit still works well as image capture software with it's annotation features, etcetera, in my opinion.

Why is it that with every new version of SnagIt good old things are made more complicated than before? I am used to save as JPG all the time, and the fact that I can no longer have this as default "file save as" format is annoying. Also, that with the new library format, I am losing all my days folders from the older library is really a step back, too.

This default to .snagx has created a lot of extra work for me. I forget to change it to jpg then I can't find the file with the app that's looking for jpg or anything graphics format like gif. What is the point of this file extension. It's a pain in the a$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My experience, so far, is that after I have saved a file with a different format with "Save as" from the "File" menu or by use of the "Ctrl+Shift+S" keyboard shortcut, whenever I save via the same method, the last used format is selected in the "Save as type" field of the "Save As" dialogue that opens.

@David Lambert: You are right that despite the fact that it still shows file type .snagx, you can save it as jpg, because in the file name, it shows a suggested file name with .jpg as extension. Hence: IMHO, it is a bug.

I'm sorry Marcomeyer, I don't know what issue you may be having but I can confirm that it is as I described, at least for me. I just took a new capture and when I clicked on "Save As..." from the "File" menu, the "Save as type:" field had "BMP - Windows bitmap (*.bmp)" in it which is the last format I used to "Save As..."

I'm curious as to what OS you may be using because your "File name" and "Save as type" fields don't look like mine. Is that on a Mac? I have no idea how the Mac OS treats saving of files. I'm using Snagit on Windows 10 & 11.

I am using Windows 10, Version 21H2 on a standard "PC" workstation (no Mac). The system language is German, but that does not impact any such settings at all - at least not with all the software I have installed (quite a few apps so far). It used to work fine with SnagIt 2021, but with 2022, it seems to be a different story.

I am truly sorry that I can not be more help.

So I give up. My two questions above have not been answered. It is still saving in Snagit format which I don't want and the "delete from library" is still not there. This is the end of Snagit for me.

I am having the same problem with Windows 10.0.19043 and Snagit 2022. The default Save As file type is .snagx. I need the default Save As to be .jpg like in previous versions. How can I change the default file type Save As to be JPG?

Same issue here. The file name gets changed, but it keeps trying to save files in the .snagx format. It's pretty inconvenient that it does not remember the last used file type and uses that like it used to.

It does remember the last file format used. There is no longer a "preferences" setting for this. The difference is that you actually have to do a "Save As" after performing a capture. That format becomes the default "Save as type" in the "Save As" dialogue. Both image formats appear in the "Recent" tray and if you delete the ".snagx" you need to remember the file name and location of the saved file because it will disappear from the "Recent" tray upon program exit. This is not a problem for me as I have been doing this all along, well at leat since the removal of the Folder" view from the library back in Version 12. Now my library only contains the ".snagx", not the ".png, .jpg or whatever format I chose at the time I saved. I suspect this to be a work around for the many people who lost their images because of using the "right-click Delete" instead of the "Remove from library." If you maintain the ".snagx" datastore, you will always have access to the images to save as you choose. It's cumbersome, as I've stated previously or elsewhere in the communities, but it works.

I'm having the same problem. What's even more infuriating is that it is saving these infernal *.snagx files into my user profile's ..\documents\snagit subfolder and I can't find where to change this file path. This folder was arbitrarily assigned to be backed up on a Windows patch and I use OneDrive. Next thing I know I've got these stupid files sync'ed all over multiple computers.
Whomever the idiot was that decided to create some new proprietary format? ...the Pox on you, you filthy bugger.
(You guys are already on the edge after that stupid updater fiasco I believe in v12 or v13, that chewed up GB's of my memory and would flog my computer to its knees before giving a coup de grace and crashing it randomly overnights while I left it to do some other task. It took weeks to sort it out because my subscription expired and you wouldn't help me. Shove your snagx files where the sun doesn't shine. )

I found a...workaround.
In Snagit 2022 Editor, select; 'Edit -> Editor Preferences', go to the 'Library' tab. Uncheck the the flags;
- 'Automatically save new image captures in the Library'
and
- 'Automatically save new video captures in the Library'
At least now when I do a 'Save as' and save to jpg it doesn't leave a copy of the file in .jpg and .snagx format. (Junking up my computers).
TechSmith. FIX THIS hot mess you've created. I DO NOT WANT TO EVER SEE A .snagx FILE FORMAT ON ANY OF MY COMPUTERS!!!!
2 -
luddite, that's good but you still have to do a "Save As" and you can't "Tag" the files for cataloguing. If you close the capture in the "Recent" tray, it's gone from the library.

This just does NOT work. PERIOD. Neither setting other format in Share -> Save As Preferences or setting a new Profile with other format. Snagit *always* defaults to your stupid "snagx" format which NOBODY ASKED FOR.
"If it ain't broke..." but here came the geniuses at Techsmith "fixing" it. (-‸ლ)
Do you actually use your own products? who t f wants to save as default in "snagx" format, that NOBODY ELSE USES IN THE WHOLE PLANET?2 -
I've been having the same problem ever since updating to SnagIt 2022. I was just in a chat session with a rep named Paul J. (probably not his real name). Anyway, he said the problem could be resolved by creating a new preset. I told him I tried that and it didn't work. He then told me it was a known bug and TechSmith is working on it. So why would he tell me to try something that didn't work if it's a known bug?
In any case, having to choose Save As from the file menu is impractical as it adds extra steps and extra copies of an image - waaaaaaaaaaay to confusing! I'm used to having a Save icon in the tool bar at the top of the editor. All I had to do was click that and it would bring up the save dialog box with the format defaulting to either JPG or PNG. Now when I click that, it appears to do nothing - except maybe save the image in the SNAGX format which I and apparently no one else wants.
As requested numerous times - please fix this extremely annoying bug quickly!2 -
I sincerely do hope that TechSmith is fixing this customer-unfriendly behavior of that save-as-bug very quickly. Otherwise: go back to 2021 version and ask for the support plan money back. As simple as that.

With my upgrade to Snagit 2022, I cannot see captures in the Editor that I've changed to jpg. Here's what the image now looks like in the Editor:
Working as designed or is there some setting I can choose to correct this?

You can +1 me to the list of people who are very unhappy about the inability to save images as jpg's by default. If not fixed ASAP, I will request a refund and drop back to a version that does not require the tedious extra steps each time.

12/28/21 UPDATE - I just spoke to Tech Support. This is a known issue and the Snagit Team is working hard to fix it.
They will roll out an update when it is fixed. Please be patient. Thank you

It doesn't seem to be as high a priority to them as it should be. Users who are frustrated by this issue need to let TechSmith know. The more users make them aware of the problem, the more impetus they'll have to solve the problem, quickly.
It's been 6 months now and this problem has not been resolved! I switched back to ShagIt 2021 and will stay there until TechSmith fixes this problem - preferably by dumping the lame .snagx file format and allowing users to choose their preferred, industry standard file format - e.g.: .jpg, .png, .bmp, etc.
