I'm old and handicapped....this bullshit from children is a tremendous strain on me. Having to press extra keys to do something that was automatic is not acceptable. This is just another sign of the times where children play with perfectly usable software to perpetuate their jobs. The idiots have even 'upgraded' v2021 to incorporate this halfwit schema.

I've got a size 13 boot that needs a nice dark home so kindly point me to the moron that came up with this so I can deposit it accordingly.

I've given up. I simply removed SnagIt 2022 and reinstalled 2021.

Doubt I go back now, even if they do fix it. Doubt I renew my account with them. The only way a company who does something like that is to suffer some pain. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Enjoy the pendulum swing, TechSmith. I feel betrayed.

The worst of all is how they decided, without any input from their customers: "we are gonna FORCE  feeding our stupid useless own format down your throat, wether you like or not"

This is no "bug". This isn't a problem that takes weeks/months to solve. This was a decision made ON PURPOSE.

Yes, I agree and so our business [Multi-Nation business] has decided to move back to Snagit 2021.

I've just setup a project to look at alternative applications suitable for our business..

I've had enough!  I can't tell you how many times I have inadvertently saved files in the totally useless .snagx format.  I'm uninstalling the latest version of SnagIt and re-installing an older version.  TechSmith has lost my respect and trust - not to mention my money for any future updates.  The updates to SnagIt are nowhere near significant enough to warrant paying them year after year - especially when they deliberately sabotage the program's functionality and ease of use.

Please add my name to the list of Snagit users who are not interesting in using a new proprietary format with Snagit that forces extra work for the user. I have been using Snagit for many years and I'm extremely disappointed in this lame change. I want to change the default "save as" format to .jpg. I have been happy with the behavior of the library up until this change. Please fix ASAP!

I upgraded, and when I went to save an image, was forced to use .snagx. As soon as I realized I could no longer save as a .jpg, I went back to snagit 2021. Fix the problem NOW!

Same here - recently upgraded and highly irritated that the SaveAs .jpg doesn't stick as the default once you use it.  Have to agree with gplosker and others above!  Please fix ASAP!!

I sent my comments to TechSmith via Facebook Messenger and received an optimistic response from them on this issue. See image below:

Had to uninstall v 2022 and reinstall v 2021. It's fine again. But, why did I have to do it ? In 30+ years I have seen it happen many times, nice program is ruined by new innovations.
Greetings from Finland. It's now -25 Celsius, real winter !

    @gplosker

This is good news. Thanks for your update. Now, we have a date and can stop complaining. Let's hope for the best.

After I complained to Techsmith Support one of the support people sent a pre-release version of an "improved" Snagit 2022 which I dutifully installed after removing 2021 & 2022 from my computer. This version defaults to PNG whereas for the past 20+ years the default has been JPG but I can't see how to change the save format from PNG to JPG. On installation it asks where I want to put the saved files and I've ALWAYS saved to Downloads since 99% of my saved images end up in some other document or website. Even though I changed it from Documents to Downloads it still saves to Documents for the first time ever in my use of Snagit. Does anyone have the Snagit 2021 setup file? I clicked on the link from the message Techsmith sent me to download 2021 but it downloads the latest version. I'm going to wait until the next release of Snagit before I do anything about my use of the product. If it's still screwed up I'm going to use something else. Does anyone have the names of strong competitors to Snagit?

    Hi Lane,
I still found a 2021 version on my disk. It is german, but it also has the language options english and so on.
I put it into my dropbox - fell free to check if it works for you:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/65c7rx9u9vlb4on/snagit2021.exe?dl=0
I build software for more than 3100 car dealers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I can't understand that it is such a problem for TechSmith to understand  the simple user whishes in this case.
Good luck from Lindlar - Germany Wolfgang

Thanks! I went back through my email messages from Techsmith and I found a link to Snagit 2021. If that doesn't work I'll use the version you put in DropBox. You can delete the file you put up there for me, I've downloaded it too. The sizes of the files are nearly identical. Fingers crossed I can get back to a version that works the way I want it to.

You can also download previous version software from their website. Scroll down to the bottom of the 'Product' page where you will find a link to 'Windows Version History.' Scroll to the bottom of that page and you will find a link to 'Download All Products' which contains downloads of the most recent files for each version going back to Version 4.

When updating to version 2022.01, the problem is not solved, it still prompts me every time in this hated extension snagx. In the end, I still solved the problem by switching to version 2021

Does anyone know if the promised Jan. 13th update (mentioned above) was ever released?  Did it solve the problem?  Or do we still need to keep using an older version of SnagIt?

Hi All - I just installed the Snagit Update (v. 2022.0.1) and it appears the "save as" functionality has been restored to the last used "save as" format. Yay!

Updating to 2022.0.1 only fixes the issue when you leave "automatically save new captures to library" checked. When you uncheck that, it will default to snagx again.

Complete nonsense to have two copies of each capture on your computer of course. It will fill up the library folder over time, with -indeed- snagx format files. You just want to save the jpg where you want and not have the clutter of getting the capture saved twice. So you want to be able to uncheck that. But then the problem ain't solved.

Been updating, deinstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, with/without admin priviliges, etc. etc. When I decided to leave settings default it worked. Then funneled it down to the autosave checkbox.

I'm back to 2021 too. Not gonna move anymore. If you fix it, fix it right.

Hi Raywijk - I agree - you should not have to automatically save to new format to have proper "save as" functionality. I encourage you to lean on them via Social Media. I used Facebook Messenger and they were very responsive to my input/questions.

When I try to "save as" in .png format, my captured image becomes pixelated.  I have not encountered this issue until recently. Please help.

I have version 2022.0.1 Build 15562 and it's still always prompting to save the file and to the snagx file format.

How could one my "have to have / easies to use" tools over so many years now be such a failure...

It's now March 2022. Was this maintenance release supposed to be in the year 2022, or perhaps another year in the future, ... or have we been promised vaporware?

TECHSMITH . . . are you monitoring these comments??

SRSLY!!!  How many complaints do you have to receive for this issue to get any priority?!?!!?

I've used this product for years.  Easy.  Simple.  Now, it's just a daily frustration and I'm having to learn a bunch of new expletives.

I'm reinstalling 2021.  No point in paying for any more upgrades if this issue is not fixed.

May be I'm taking this thread a bit late compared to the last reply but to share my experience a little bit, my corporation has launched a a recent update from Snagit 2021 to Snagit 2022 and I was surprised by how slow the response time were when capturing a single screenshot. Then I started to investigate about the recent changes and the SNAGX format and migrated my existing Library (almost 10GB was a bit long). Then all my SNAGX were sized at around 1KB and listed with a red Cross in the Library.. So I started to investigate and noticed that the path for the Library was a Network Path (which can explain the slowliness) and I immediately switched to a local path on my SSD (C:\users\, ...) then it was a bit better but still I was not able to recollect all my previous captures... so I decided to move all previous SNAGX converted items to another folder and was trying to let Snagit deal with the new local path for the Library and now everything is working flawlessly...So I will start from there with Snagit 2022. This was a bit hard to configure from the start but now as it is working exactly how it was before, and may be even better due to the fact that the Library is empty, I will enjoy this update (I hope for it... :) ). BYW before I cleaned my library each snapshot was mentioning SNAGX and now it is working as before without any mention and Save As retain my previous choice with JPG so I#m not sure I understand the discussion over this thread with lots of negative comments related to SNAGX. From What I understand SNAGX is one way to merge the WINDOWS and MAC Format into a unique format and as I am also using SNAGIT on a MAC I welcome this merge for granted, even if I am not using much the Library Native features but considering rather Copy/Paste or Save As from the Editor 100% of the time...

There is no need to have a unique, proprietary format for the accepted norms (JPEG,TIFF, GIF) saved files. The only reason this would be the case so that edited/annotated captures could be passed around on different systems.

By creating a proprietary format along with tying it to specific app versions (how many times have you seen that scam guys) a company is trying to force us to be tied into a totally controlled environment.

The main issue here was existing functionality was removed and replaced with a totally workflow useless process. I could simply press my hotkey and press Enter for the capture to be saved where I had indicated in the prefs...no save or save as dialog was needed.

Muscle, brain and eye memory is an inherent part of any workflow, especially when you are using such a process as screen capture in a major way. So to 'rewrite' this process not only totally hoses all these memories but it brings on stress, lost work and extra keystrokes which adds up to RSS and CVS.

As a MS/apple dev going on 40 years I see this process in pretty much every software product I use. Marketing children try to justify their jobs by creating a hip, cool, trendy product with big mouth, giant teeth influencers showing off how great this is and what a better user experience it creates all the while not having a clue what real people do every day.

Techsmith software can be considered as being 'mission critical' and as such, any development process should establish this parameter as the dominating factor for any changes. I personally think software companies should be sued for creating stressful working situations when viable alternatives have been used for many years.

When someone uses "save as" they are deliberately intending to change the format and target destination, typically to better suit that target. The Techsmith assumptions on user behavior are way off on this issue.

Per above, Raywijk said the issue is only fixed if you "leave 'automatically save new captures to library' checked. When you uncheck that, it will default to snagx again."

Tested this morning using v. 2022.0.2 (64 bit, Build 16407) and Raywijk is correct - this will only work properly if you leave these boxes checked, thus creating two separate saved files. Clearly this is a problem. You should not have to save the file twice if you do not want to.

Regarding the default folder for SnagIt Datastore. This can be easily set using the "Library Location" box at SnagIt Editor>>Edit>>Editor Preferences>>Library>>.

I personally do not mind having two saved files. I can always go to the Snagx library and do some deleting. I of course agree with MT that virtually all software and service providers are and have been trying to control user behavior, especially since cloud storage came into common usage. If you ask Microsoft to store your files in OneDrive, which they constantly push on you and even setup as the default save location, it will automatically delete all your local copies without so much as warning you. All the major players are guilty of this approach to controlling user behavior.

An excellent point on cloud storage as this is yet another major push to dig into our pockets. MS, Adobe, apple, Google...they all rack you into 'cloud' storage knowing good and well you'll quickly hit the limit and have to 'upgrade'.

Techsmith.....no response on this other that socmed drivel is a classic sign that you simply do not care what we say. I've already gone back to Gadwin Printscreen as I was pushed into Snagit by a mactard I had to deal with..

Well, I persevered for as long as I could take it. In fact the 2022.0.2  version is worse again, requiring a 'Finish' button and a 'Cancel' button to be pressed before access to the 'Copy All' button is available, and it still saves two files - one of which is a .snagx file that I do not want.

    I've uninstalled 2022.0.02 and reinstalled 2021.0.0.

Like many others, I won't be considering the 2022 version or any further upgrades that inhibit my workflow. It is beyond me that management and the developers cannot realize what a retrograde step they have taken. Or perhaps they have further underlying reasons to coerce users to become 'locked-in'?

I also still cannot understand why management and the developers refuse to accept the criticism of the unwanted changed functionality they have now provided.

I have been a loyal supporter of Techsmith products, including Snagit, and willingly upgraded every year for more than 10 years. Not any more. Not while they make a previously 'easily usable' product now absolutely difficult to use.

Maybe everyone needs to inundate TechSmith with support tickets.  Venting in this forum doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere.

Out of curiosity, I did a search and there are 94 other Community threads making the same complaint.
