Thank you all for your patience as we troubleshooted, identified and fixed multiple bugs in the Save As and Default File format workflows. These bugs have been resolved in Snagit Windows 2022.1.0 which released Wednesday June 15, 2022.

In this version and those going forward Snagit should respect your preferred file format for new captures and for media you chose to Save As a different format. However if you open media of any format and chose Save it will preserve the format of that media unless you chose to change it via Save As.

Again we appreciate your patience as we worked through and fixed multiple issues that caused the frustrating behavior.

Here is one method.  Open the Editor and go the Share options and set the options that you want the JPG format and be sure and apply the settings as per diagram.

Then, there is the additional option to auto-save each capture  automatically before it goes to the editor and this save can be of a file type of your choosing and a folder of your choosing. This can be done with a special hotkey preset.

    Thank you very much.

This would be great if it actually worked for me. Changing to JPG does not help as it always defaults to SnagX

Actually, I got this to work but had to kill the app and restart.

Does not work for me. When I check configuration after restart I see default JPG but snagit will still save as snagx.

Mine seems to be fine. Save as, shows JPG as file type. I save it to a location and check and it is a *.jpg

Actually, this does not work. When I killed snag-it and restarted I was restarting version 2021 which did not uninstall. So even if I tell it to save as JPG by default, it does not when using 2022

I started a support ticket about this issue and was told it's a known bug to be resolved asap. As a temporary workaround I found that Snagit will retain the previous file extension from one capture to the next if you use PNG. Anything else reverts to SNAGX with subsequent captures. Certainly an annoyance and workflow killer!

Hi.  This is a big problem for me.  I use Snag-It many, many times a day to send screen prints in emails to customers.  Having the .snagx extension as a default that doesn't respond to the Save As Preferences causes me many extra steps as I have to remember each time to change the file type.  I hope the fix comes soon.  Thanks.  Margaret

what a clunky product, full of bugs, it leaves "metadata" folder (?!) and other extraneous formats that later need to be cleaned u in a specific order. Please, fix the bugs! I am seriously considering going back to 2021 until 2022 is repaired and made user-friendly

I chatted with someone in Support and they promised to look into it and e-mail me with the solution. Still waiting.

Very frustrating. Tried all of the above possible fixes on my new Snagit 2022 install and still cannot force a default "Save as file" for jpg.  Always forces me to get rid of the Snagx save option. We need a fix --- Snagit !

I encountered the same problem. This is a "feature" of SnagIT 2022.

Yes, I'd agree it's a major issue. Really messes up my workflow. As I had mentioned in a previous post, I'm using the .png format as a workaround for the time being. It seems to be the only file type Snagit 22 will 'remember' from one capture to the next. That said, .jpg would be my default file type of choice.  Certainly not .snagx. Hope they release a fix for this asap!

I would do the PNG but I have to message a lot of the screenshots and they are too big.

Same here. In some cases the png is small enough but we really need to be able to set a default for jpg and have it stick.

Support person claims they are not having a problem that we all have. They sent me email with lots of troubleshooting instructions. I am too busy to handle it now. I will try, but I am not holding my breath. Obviously, they don't read customers comments here. I wish they did.

This is the response I received via email from snagit's tech-support on 12/9/21...

    >> ... talked with the development team and looks like this is a bug they are working towards. However I do not have a time frame on when it would be fixed.

I have been a big supporter and fan of SnagIt until now. It is an arrogant software engineering and/or marketing decision to force a format that NOBODY ASKED FOR and then shove it down our throats as the default format automatically saved without the option to create your own default or remember your last saved format as it has in all previous versions.

I have already uninstalled the 2022 version after getting a snarky response back from the idiot tech support contact. I would get rid of a car that unilaterally makes that kind of decision for me permanently. It's an easy decision to take some egotistical jerk's idea of creating their own ecosystem of file formats at our expense and make the product far less user-friendly and much more cumbersome.

What a bunch of stupid dopes

yes its a problem when a provider wants you to update and the update creates more problems, and even worse when you have to convince them that there is a problem.. :-(

Going back to the previous version ...

I found a manual workaround. It's not the greatest, but it works.

For every capture, immediately click Save-As. Name the file as you normally would (your default type will appear) and click Save - AND then immediately delete the duplicate .sngx file from the Editor.

I've had it! The unresponsiveness of the Support team is appalling. I too am going back to Snagit2021. I may give it another shot if/when it is fixed. Releasing a buggy product and then claiming that it is working fine is -- as someone here said -- arrogant. It is also bad for business.

    Marshall Einsenberg:

Yes, there are ways to work around the bug if you're willing to add several clicks with every image you are saving. No, thanks! Ain't got no time for that. I am going back to Snagit2021 until they get their act together.

This does not work and even when you choose to save in another format it still only saves initially in the crappy snagx format that no other program on the planet recognises.  It then means you have to resave the file so now you have two files on the hard drive rather than one.  So you know have to go through two steps just to get to the file format your after and then once your hard drive starts to bloat you need to go and delete the crappy snagx file formats which have zero value in the first place.  Clearly this companies has zero idea on how people use their product and zero understanding of the customer and what they want and what works for them.  Now that they have this crap we have to consider moving to alternate product as they have no interest in listening to customers.  Why build another file format anyway, its not like its better and there are already more than enough quality file formats.  Seriously waste of money and just annoys customers.

Maybe if everyone starts asking for refunds you might actually get the message!!!

Sean, you hit the nail on the head! If they cared they would listen to us, the users. Crappy product, crappy support, crappy all the way.

I personally think its a bug. There is obviously some customer service issues as we have heard many stories to why its this way.  But in the end I would hope it gets fixed soon. Seems like an easy fix.

Until then I am running older version.

from a developer standpoint, a "feature" is a (cough cough) bug you don't want to fix.
