What's the difference between Screencast-o-matic and Snagit?

  • Lots! This page of tutorials gives a good overview of Snagit capabilities.

But what is it you're wanting to do or make? That will help focus the answer on use cases and features relevant to you.

It's not so much what I intend to do as what the possibilities are. I currently use screencastomatic for simple screen recording for my online classes. I know that SnagIt is also screencasting software, but it's more expensive than screencastomatic. I'm wondering what justifies the extra cost. Perhaps there are some things I could do that I haven't even envisioned because I didn't know it was possible. I will view those tutorials, though, as that should give me an idea. I just thought there might be a side-by-side comparison chart or something like that I could look at. Thanks!

I am not familiar with screencast-o-matic, but based on its feature set it appears similar to Camtasia as opposed to Snag-it.  Snag-it started first and foremost as a screen capture utility.  Video was added as a feature later on.  Camtasia is screen video recording only, and it is full featured in that regard.  The price for Camtasia is significantly higher than for Snag-it.  The one difference I see is that screencast-o-matic is subsciption based only.  Both Snag-it and Camtasia offer both subscriptions as well as single cost licensing models.  Snag-it single cost license for a version is actually not very expensive.  The subscription model is pay forever, and it will cost more in the long run.
