Its the only feature I use consistently. I am cancelling my agreement with Camtasia at this point. They don't want my money it seems.

it's an option in Camtasia 2021; download and install that; your 2022 key will  work; 2021 and 2021 can exist side-by-side

Thanks for all the comments and the hints, especially for epic pen (I will see if I will be allowed to install this on the PC with which I do 99,9 % of my recordings. And, yes, installing 2021, would be a possibility, but such workarounds miss a little bit my main point:

There es a great feature in a software I licensed for so many years now. Newer versions usually add (somtimes: too many) features or remove bugs. But why, in the name of Zeus' b...... (credits: Stanley Goodspeed/The rock), shall I be forced to download another installation package, install the whole stuff and hosting two versions of a software just do be able to use a feature that worked for so long? It's like Microsoft would remove the =SUM()-function from Excel 365 but offer the possibility to download and install Excel 2010 in parallel and to process the spreadsheets which, surprise, use this very rarely used function.

It's sad that Camtasia only shows you what features you get when upgrading to Camtasia 2022 but not which features you lose. 😅

As an alternative I recommend the free tool ZoomIt from Microsoft. 👍

Free Epic pen has screen draw ,highlighter & a screenshot tool ONLY.

If you want everything else, you have to pay a monthly or yearly fee for that.

I quit recommending Epic Pen long ago. It seems many years ago it was full featured for free but that changed long ago.

I'll let Microsoft's demo some of the many features it has, which is far more than epic pen offers for free. As my screen shot for epic pen above shows.

apfelbenny was spot on to recommend this tool.

We need more contributors like him contributing to this forum.

    apfelbenny's suggestion

Microsoft's FREE........... ZoomIt tool got buried under several previous posts.  https://learn.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/downloads/zoomit

It appears to have many good features and worth a look see.

    ZoomIt has 2 Board modes.

    A Whiteboard & Blackboard mode.

In these examples, I'm using the text / typing feature in each mode.

All ZoomIt features are accessed via keyboard shortcuts.

Draw mode is Ctrl + 2

In draw mode you hit W for Whiteboard or K for Blackboard.

    ZoomIt

10 Minute Countdown Timer.......... { Ctrl + 3 } is the keyboard shortcut.

It could be recorded with Camtasia then added to library for project usage.

Or recorded with Zoomit's screen recorder. Ctrl+5

Reverse the video for a timer.

    Everyone doesn't use Camtasia 2022.

I suspect many don't want to pay a subscription to Epic Pen for the same features.

I suspect after I post this next Zoomit feature I post, you'll post another comment.

You've posted 8 Epic Pen comments in this thread already. You've made your point +++

Okay, back to the 100% free program. ZoomIt.

Drawing annotations. You cannot change the size of the annotations. To me, they seem to be reasonable but I'd like to see resizing added at some point. They remain the same width regardless of screen magnification.

All of the keyboard shortcuts are listed on the download page.

There are keys you hold for a straight line, rectangle, ellipse, arrow. Freehand drawing is the default mode. Smooth freehand lines are obtainable with a drawing tablet.

ZoomIts zoom in feature while recording isn't required as you can do the same in Camtasia's editor.

Its a built in feature just the same and shouldn't be overlooked.

I had to create a very small gif due to file size restrictions in this forum.

ZoomIts screen recorder both impressed and surprised me. It must use some very refined  algorithms. But then again, Microsoft has deep pockets.

I recorded a webpage to capture text.

I did the same with Camtasia using .trec.

At 300% canvas zoom. The text looks about the same to me.

I exported both videos at 60% quality and compared the zoomed text side by side. The .trec may be a few percentage points darker, but overall. I'm not seeing any appreciable differences.

I recorded a high color high action .trec for 1:43 at 2K  in Camtasia 2022. It was 4.65GB

I recorded the identical video in H264 with Camtasia 2022. It was 1.88 GB

The original Camtasia recorder came in at 860MB using H264.

I recorded the same video with ZoomIt and it was 224MB or 1/4 of a GB
