Bug Report: Sharing of Images is Broken for Several Applications in Snagit 2023
With the 2023 update, several of my sharing functions have been broken. For example, whenever I try to Share to PDF Expert, Pixelmator Pro, or ScreenFloat, I get the message:
Application not supported
This application does not support .jpg
files. Please change the export file
format and try again.
Now clearly, these programs all support .jpg format images. What's more, if I use the Shareful extension to "Open In..." these applications, they all function properly and open the .jpg image.
BTW, changing the image sharing type to .png, tiff, or .pdf has no effect on this bug. Snagit says those filetypes are unsupported in the target app as well.
I have screenshots of these errors, which I'll try to attach.
Platform:
macOS Monterey
Version 12.6
Mac Studio (2022)
Chip Apple M1 Max
Memory 64 GB
Startup Disk Macintosh HD

Hi,
Thank you for reporting this, I see the same issue with jpg, but I was able to share png and pdf successfully to ScreenFloat and PDF Expert. I will get an issue logged with the team for the jpg issue, but I'm curious if you have more info on pdf and png failing. Does it affect other apps than those 3?

Thanks for looking into this. Here are the issues I've seen:
For a share setting of PDF:
Yes, this is new and strange. I recently installed PDF Nitro, but did not make it the default opener for PDFs. On my system, that's PDF Expert. However, after installing Nitro:- I *can share PDFs to Nitro PDF
- If I try to share to PDF Expert, or several other PDF-friendly apps (Preview, Pixelmator PRO, ScreenFloat, EverNote, even Mac Photos...it opens in Nitro PDF instead!)
- This *doesn't* happen with DropBox or Microsoft Word (it works normally there)
- If I drag the file to Yoink, it is definitely a PDF
For a Share setting of PNG:
Same thing. It still opens those files in Nitro PDF. ...
If I remove Nitro PDF.0 -
...then it does the same thing with PDF Expert. And if I remove that, it does it with ScreenFloat. The order in the Share preferences doesn't seem to dictate this, though. I can change that, and it does the same thing.

I should note that I first noted these behaviors today, after updating to 2023.0.2. Prior to this, I was just seeing the error windows I first reported to you.
Hope that helps!0 -
That's very odd, you're using the share to Application output that Snagit offers, correct? That explicitly says to open files in the app that is chosen, so i'm not sure how that could result in another app opening those files, unless the target app is doing something strange.

I should clarify that these occur only when choosing Application as the Share type, and then specifying one of the allowed apps from my Application folder. I've used this functionality without difficulty for the last couple years – sharing to ScreenFloat, Devonthink, Pixelmator, and various PDF apps. It has always worked well, and the few times that I got a "filetype not supported" error, it accurately reflected the rules of the recipient app. The new behavior has only been observed since the update to Snagit 2023.

We made no changes to that between 2022 and 2023, so I'm not sure what the issue would be here. Would you be willing to make a quick video showing this and attach it to a support ticket? https://www.techsmith.com/contact.html

Hi,
We just shipped a 2023.0.3 update today that now allows sharing jpg and jpeg files to Application, hopefully this makes your workflow easier!
