Thank you Rick but I just want to extract a 4 minute section of the recording.

Unfortunately I cannot explain why this would happen. But here is an alternative for you.

There exists a free program named ClipGrab that will allow you to paste the URL to the YouTube video and just save it to your hard drive.

Click here to visit the ClipGrab site

Sorry about that. Your original post seemed to imply you had recorded two hours.

Why couldn’t you use clip grab to save the whole thing to your local drive, and from there, use Camtasia to isolate the four minutes you want to keep?

That was certainly my own thought pattern!

Why would I use Clipgrab, that is the reason I bought Snagit. Tech support told me that any recording more than an hour is unreliable, wish I had known that before I bought it.

Thank you all for you suggestions.

Peter, perhaps you can clarify? In your original post you said:

I recorded a 2 hour Christmas programme from Youtube.

    Then later you said:

but I just want to extract a 4 minute section of the recording.

    So I'm a bit confused.

For starters, why wouldn't you just get kind of close to where you want that segment, then record only that roughly four minute segment? I would think SnagIt would handle that just fine.

The suggestion for ClipGrab was so that the entire video could be downloaded intact. Then you would just trim out all but the four minutes of what you wanted.

However, as TechSmith is saying that things can get a bit unreliable if your recording is over an hour, I could easily see where the issue could be in the editor. And if that's the case, it likely wouldn't matter if you loaded a local MP4 or if you recorded it with SnagIt.

I do wish you the best of luck in finding a resolution!

    Cheers... Rick :)

You can download a video from you tube 10 times faster than recording  it  while its playing.
SnagIt drops frames when recording, which can create juddering.

Recording a video while its playing .Should be done as a last ditch effort, when its the only option you have.

I use Internet Download Manger myself. It gives you full control, pause, timed downloads, etc.
It blows away free down loaders. https://www.internetdownloadmanager.com

The audio and video quality is better, because there no re-encoding.
For viewing purposes. Capture quality it as good as it get.
I can name several other advantages.

You can cheap out and use a free downloader just the same.

    Regards,Joe

Thank you all for your suggestions. Yesterday I tried again and it worked perfectly, downloaded the whole thing (2 hours) and then extracted the portion I wanted.
