    Hi all;

We understand that this is happening and would like to note that Camtasia, current or past versions, does not officially support virtual cameras. That it used to work was not due to compatibility that we wrote into the Recorder, but rather due to a set of unknown circumstances. As it's not an officially supported method of camera capture there is little that Support can do to help in this situation. We do have this logged in our repository and have had a developer take a stab at it yet was unsuccessful in finding a working solution. Since it is logged we might eventually see the compatibility between virtual cameras like Xsplit, Logi Camera, or other virtual cameras improve, however we are still operating under the fact that USB/integrated webcams are the only officially supported webcameras at this time. If things change we'll be sure to update here, however, any change may be some time out (if a change is made at all).

Does Windows see the devices? A recent Windows update may be the cause?

    Hi Ed,
Yes windows sees the devices. The screen shots are taken from both Camtasia 2020 and 2019 within 2 minutes of each other on the same system.

Curious - that Camtasia 2020 disabled what worked in 2019.  I'm outta suggestions, try contacting tech support: https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us

    Good Luck!

Yes I have the same problem on Camtasia 2020

Please fix this. Supported or not, you've removed existing functionality.  The fact that it worked because...no one knows why isn't a valid reason for not fixing it.

Support virtual cameras.  OBS Studio can do it and it's free.  We don't pay TechSmith to make excuses.  We pay you to keep your software updated with today's technology.

What is the solution then to hide the backgroun in Camtasia on my webcam?

Yes, same problem for me too. Xsplit Vcam worked on Camtasia 2019, but stopped working with 2020. I would really love for Camtasia to prioritize this enhancement request and fix virtual camera support it for the community.

    Thank you,
    Nikhil

    Hi Gwenn;
With Camtasia you'd need to use a green or blue screen and then use the Remove-a-Color feature in Camtasia. We have a blog with some great tips for lighting (which is crucial) which you can find here and we have a quick tutorial on Remove-a-Color here.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Maybe TechSmith can step up and build your own background removal / blurring functionality.  If not, support virtual cameras.

It affects me, too: The virtual camera doesn't work in Camtasia 2020, which works fine in Camtasia 2019 (and in all the other programs on my desktop). I also need this option for XSplit Vcam. And I need it urgently!
So I will return to Camtasia 2019. And I hope for a quick improvement in Camtasia 2020.

Yeah, not having an inbuilt blur background functionality is pretty weak at this point. For all the great features of Camtasia, it seems like a massive oversight to not have this.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Virtual Cameras Not Available in Camtasia 2020.

I had been using Camtasia 2018 for the last couple of years and virtual cameras always worked fine.

Last week I got a new computer and decided since I was starting anew, I'd go ahead and upgrade to Camtasia 2020, however, none of the installed virtual cameras show up as options within the program.

Does this have something to do with Camtasia 2020? Is there now some settings I have to tweak to get this to work?

I powered up my old system and took a screenshot (below) showing the virtual cameras as an option, but with Camtasia 2020 on the new system, the only option I have is the actual physical camera itself/none of the virtual cameras display (yet all the virtual cameras work fine in other programs, e.g. Zoom).  For what it's worth, both the old and new systems are Dell and are running Windows 10 64-bit.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Well, theres no reason you can't record with a version of Camtasia that supports it, and edit in 2020.

According to TechSmith, its a bit of a fluke it ever worked to begin with.
I read this as, its unlikely it will ever work again. I could be wrong?

In the meantime. that's what I would do.

    Regards,Joe

I also came here to find out why XSplit VCam wasn't working and I'm disappointed with the answer.

Adding to this Camtasia 2020 support the virtual cam, it's just Xsplit vCam not appearing. xSplit has better background removal then the one shown in screenshot.

on further testing, it did record the video but not with settings like background blur or removing it. So at last did not work as expected.

    Hey I need this too.

I really do not expect software that I pay for to go backwards when I pay for an upgrade. I expect this to work as it did in the 2019 version.

I look forward to an update that brings this back.

Definitely +1 to this. I'm very disappointed with the new version of Camtasia for Mac.

Not only it's removing a crucial feature for me but still has the same (or more) bugs and there's no new interesting features. :(

Yeah this is awful - new version breaks the only way I record in Camtasia, with an OBS virtual cam. The camera controls and filters in Camtasia are terrible, so this is the only way it works for me. Definitely will not be recommending anyone else upgrade to this version, since it breaks the functionality that worked fine in previous versions.

I was disappointed too, to find out that 2020 "lost" a feature that helped reduce the effort needed to make great video, with a webcam.  I use XSplit and it's background removal is really effective.

Camtasia, you do need to find out what changed and get Virtual Cams working again.   More and more people are using them, especially with HD and UHD webcams.

    GREAT NEWS!!!!

I just updated XSplit vCam to version 2 (just came out) and now I am able to use it as a camera in Camtasia 2020.

Initially there seems to be some lag with audio and video sync but as luck would have it Camtasia also released an update (2020.0.7) after upgrading, I am now able to use XSplit vCam as a camera source and the recordings were smooth and in sync.

    We're back in business!!! HOORAY!!!

Woohoo!!!  It looks like Camtasia listened!  I've just updated both pieces of software and can confirm it does indeed now work!
