Update: if you want to downgrade to 2021.4.2, do this:

    1. Uninstall SnagIt (otherwise you cannot downgrade)
    2. Download the version 2021.4.2 from this link: https://download.techsmith.com/snagit/releases/2142/snagit.exe
    3. Install SnagIt 2021.4.2

    I hope it helps.

We're looking into it and can reproduce it, thank you for the responses!

My colleague Dirk Frazier on our TechSmith data team noticed it as well and we were talking about it just the other day.  We found that it didn't happen with the August version of PBI Desktop, only the September release.  For us, Snagit hangs for a long while (maybe 5-10 seconds) then seems to show a potentially scrollable area even when the PBI Desktop application is in full-screen mode.  (The scrolling capture fails when clicking one of the areas.)

Thanks for reporting it Marco!  And thanks for the great work with Alberto on SQLBI; we refer to your DAX guidance regularly.

Hi Walter, I am glad you are able to reproduce it!

Just in case it could help: Microsoft is replacing Chromium with Microsoft Edge WebView2 in Power BI, but I am not sure this is already shipped with the Microsoft Store version and whether it could be related to this issue.

    Thanks,

    Marco

Good point, we'll keep it in mind. We have been switching over some of our hosted browser windows to WebView2 as well. So we can check it on those too.

Still looking into this. Our colleague, Dirk, did just report that switching to WebView2 mode in the latest PowerBI release seemed to fix this for him. So that may be a workaround for now.

Chris Larson - Thanks for the communication - I'm still sitting on 2021.4.2
Was Dirk successful with 2021.4.4 and the October release of PowerBI?

Hi Scott - I'm using Power BI Desktop Version: 2.98.683.0 64-bit (October 2021). This blog post describes how to turn on the "Power BI Desktop infrastructure update" in the Preview features section: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-desktop-installer-changes-webview2/ After restarting Power BI Desktop I was able to use Snagit to capture the screen without any hanging. Hope this helps!

Yep I can also confirm that if you are using the Manual Download version of desktop and switch the preview of "Power BI Desktop infrastructure update" on then Snagit works.

The Power BI version from Microsoft Store does not have this preview option and still causes the hang.

    @Chris Larson

Alas, that workaround did not do it for me - Snagit still freezes in Power BI Desktop

Power BI Desktop, 2.98.683.0 64 bit (oktober 2021)

    Snagit, 2021.4.4 (64 bit) (Build 12541) 14-09-2021

    WebView2 Runtime 95.0.1020.30

    Windows 10 Home, 10.0.19042 Build 19042

@Marco Downgrade to 2021.4.2 helped, thanks

I can confirm that enabling the "Power BI Desktop infrastructure update" preview feature, does not address the problem for me.

    Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime: 95.0.1020.30
Power BI Desktop: Version: 2.97.921.0 64-bit (September 2021)
    Snagit: 2021.4.4 (64 Bit) (Build 12541) - 9/14/2021
Windows 10 Pro: Version 21H1 OS build 19043.1288

Is there any update on an ETA for a fix to SnagIt for this problem? I probably encounter this a few times a day. I'll invest time in the work-around if a fix is not in the works, though it sounds like it might not always be successful.

workaround is to do as Marco says on the first post and resist the invitation to update, as long as no fix comes from TechSmith (or power bi)

Good to know I am not alone with this issue.
I thought it was related to upgrading to Windows 11 that I recently did, but it seems it's a Power BI and Snagit issue.

Thanks, Marco, downgrading Snagit worked for me.

Hope it's going to be fixed soon though in the new release of Snagit.

Hi, one more work around as I cannot uninstall (Admin Locked) on my workstation and don't really want to enable preview in Power BI.

When you capture change from Region to Panoramic.   Then it will capture the selection.  Just a few extra clicks to start/stop the capture.

Just upgraded to Snagit 2022 (2022.0.0 build 14113) and the issue is still there :(

Had to uninstall Power BI (had microsoft store version) and do the manual install from the Power BI website (Version: 2.99.862.0 64-bit (November 2021)) and then turn On the "Power BI Desktop infrastructure update" preview feature, SnagIt 2021.4.4 (64 Bit) (Build 12541), no more SnagIt hangs plus Power Bi isn't so processor hungry...

The Power BI Desktop December 2021 version (from Microsoft Store) should fix the issue for both SnagIt 2021.4.4 and SnagIt 2022. I hope it will be out in a few days.

Can confirm, that Snagit 2022 works fine with Power BI Desktop December 2021 version.

Alas. I have installed Snagit 2022, uninstallede Snagit 2021 and rebooted. Still Power BI Desktop freezes when taking a screenshot. Power BI desktop Version: 2.100.684.0 64-bit (december 2021) ...

Henrik do what I did, worked for me...

    Hi Jarod
Thanks, I wasn't aware of the preview feature.
Now it just lags when taking a screenshot, not freezing :o)
