What types of USB microphones will work with Camtasia?
Camtasia supports the use of 3.5mm (analog) microphones, direct USB microphones, and USB/XLR microphones that have been plugged into a preamp or mixer.
What types of advanced audio setups have we tested at TechSmith?
- Focusrite Scarlett Solo
- Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
For audio mixers/advanced audio setups, how do they need to connect to the PC/Mac to work?
If the device connects to the computer via USB (2.0, 3.0, Type-C), then we should see the microphone that is plugged into the audio mixer.
Does it matter how the microphone connects to the advanced audio device?
This won’t matter as the hardware device would have a DAC (digital audio converter) built into it. This means XLR mics plugged into these devices should also work okay.
What sample rate do we recommend?
44.1khz or 48khz should both work with our products.
Troubleshooting steps
If Camtasia is not identifying your microphone and it is plugged into a mixer or preamp, please make sure that Camtasia was started after the microphone/mixer was plugged in. Once that has been verified, please try the following:
- Verify that other applications on the computer are able to see and utilize the microphone.
- If you're using an advanced audio setup, verify that the microphone is receiving power through the mixer.
- Some mixers will have a 48v switch / button that may need to be toggled on in order to send power to an XLR microphone; please confirm that it is on if required.
- If you're using Camtasia to record 3rd party software as a microphone, please ensure both Camtasia and the other software are up to date.
- If the mixer or microphone is plugged into a USB hub before being plugged into the computer, please try removing the hub and plugging the device directly into the computer.
- Note that you will want to make sure Camtasia is closed when you're swapping the devices.
- Verify that your audio bit depth is set to 16-bit or 24-bit audio (found in your mixer/preamp's settings; please refer to the manufacturer's manual for details on switching bit depth).
