How to Default to a File Type Other Than SNAGX

Option 1:

Save image manually after capturing:

  1. Open Snagit Editor.
  2. Go to Edit > Editor Preferences > Library.
  3. Uncheck the box for "Automatically save new image captures in the Library"

This allows you to select the file type and save location for images on a case by case basis.

Option 2:

Make a Snagit preset:

  1. With the Snagit Capture Application open you will want to set your capture settings like the ones shown here:

The switches to the right in the capture application can be set to whatever you would like.
  2. In the Share section where you have selected “File” (Arrow 2 in the above image) you will want to click the gearhead to the right (Arrow 3) and choose a different standard file extension for your file type (Arrow 4). (File name if you wish for a prompt to save a specific file name for your capture when choosing your location)
  3. Now when you make a capture, it will capture straight to that file type versus being a .snagx first. If you enabled the "Preview in the Editor" option in the Capture window (Arrow 1 of the above image) before the capture took place it will now open in the Editor and you will need to click up to Finish in order to finalize the capture as that file type.
  4. If this is a setup that works you can save this preset to use anytime by selecting this after you have the settings the way you want them on the capture.

Here is a short video of the process:
