Overview
The background removal tool in Camtasia is specifically designed to remove backgrounds from camera recordings. It may not work as expected on other types of content.
Limitations
Background removal does not work on the following content types:
- Cropped recordings — recordings that have been trimmed or cropped before applying the effect
- Screenshare recordings with plain backgrounds — screen recordings, even those with a simple or solid-color background
Why this happens
The background removal feature uses AI-based detection optimized for live camera footage with a person in the frame. It is not designed to process screen content or pre-edited clips.
Workarounds
- Use a physical green screen behind you during your camera recording for more reliable background removal.
- For screenshare content, consider using a solid color background on your desktop before recording, then manually mask or crop the background in the editor.
- Record your camera feed separately and apply background removal to that clip before combining it with your screenshare recording on the timeline.
