Enterprise Install Guidelines for Snagit on MacOS

Snagit Deployment Tool For MacOS

Starting with Snagit 2026.4.0 you can now leverage our deployment tool to make configurations to your Snagit Mac installation package. This new tool is built directly into the software. Modify the settings to align with the needs of your specific enterprise environment, then generate a configuration file to deploy to end users' machines.

Accessing the Snagit Deployment App

  1. Install Snagit to a machine
  2. Open a new Finder Window
  3. Navigate to Applications
  4. Find Snagit in the Applications list and Right-Click > Choose Show Package Contents
  5. In the pop up window expand the folder for Contents> MacOS > Launch the Snagit Deployment.app

Using the Snagit Deployment App

  1. In the Snagit Deployment App, toggle off any functions you want to disable. Disabled switches are gray and in the left position.
  2. Select one of the following options to export the deployment file:
    • Export for Local Testing: Exports the configuration file to the intended deployment destination /Users/Shared/TechSmith/Snagit to test the configurations prior to the deployment.
    • Export Deployment Options: Allows you to save to a different location to include in the packaging.
  3. Deploy the Snagitdeployment.json to the  /Users/Shared/TechSmith/Snagit location.
  4. To limit the possibility of tampering with the file post deployment modify permissions of this file to Read Only on end user's machines.
  5. Below is a screenshot of how this location should look in the deployment alongside the license key file. (For more information on how to create the license key file to activate Snagit, see Creating a License Key File for Snagit Deployments in the next section.)

Creating a License Key File For Snagit Deployments
  1. Download Snagit Mac DMG from this link here: https://www.techsmith.com/download/oldversions
You will want to select Snagit Mac from the Products dropdown and choose the version from the dropdown for the version of Snagit you are deploying.
  2. Go to this location: /Users/Shared/TechSmith/Snagit/
  3. Inside of the Snagit folder, create a text file named: LicenseKey We recommend using TextEdit and making sure these settings are checked in TextEdit before creating the text file. Once those settings are changed in TextEdit, close TextEdit completely and re-open it to create the text file. Do NOT put the .txt extension in the filename or allow a .txt extension to automatically be added to the file name. Make sure it is saved with UTF-8 Plain Text Encoding. See examples below: mceclip0.png
    mceclip0.png
  4. Deploy that file to all your users. *Make sure that the users have read/write/and executable permissions for this file in order for the creation of the file to take place.
  5. Once they load Snagit for the first time, it will read the license key and unlock Snagit.

This will only work for versions that have not already been unlocked. This will not overwrite a key that was previously entered.

    • First, ensure DisableUpdateRing Boolean is added to the plist
Example: defaults write com.TechSmith.Snagit.plist DisableUpdateRing -bool YES
    • Admins can then set the value to "Delayed" by running:
