Please try the solutions in the Unsupported File Formats tab below:

Solution

Microsoft does sell an extension that allows playback of HEVC content, and should resolve the error above. This HEVC extension can be purchased from Microsoft here.

Supported File Formats

You can import the following file formats into Camtasia for editing:

  • Apple ProRes (4444, 422 HQ, 422, 422 LT422 Proxy)
  • AVI
  • BMP
  • GIF
  • JPG
  • Lottie (-json, .mp4, .zip and .gif)
  • M4A
  • MOV (H.264, H.265, proRes, JPEG, and PNG codecs only).**
  • MP3
  • MP4 (AVC, H.264, and H.265 codecs)***
  • MPEG-1
  • MTS and M2TS
  • PDF (single page)
  • PNG
  • PPT
  • PPTX
  • TREC
  • WAV
  • WMA
  • WMV
*H.265 is supported in Camtasia 2022 and later only. Any ISO6 encoded video files are not supported at this time.

Note that CAMREC files can only be opened in Camtasia 2019 or earlier.

Unsupported File Formats

We have several possible options for unsupported file formats:

  • HEVC/H265
    • In order to decode HEVC/H265 natively in Camtasia, you will need one of the following hardware pieces:
        • Intel 6th generation “Skylake” or newer CPUs
        • AMD 6th generation “Carizzo” or newer APUs
        • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950, 960, Quadro P4000 or newer graphics cards
        • AMD Radeon R9 Fury, R9 Fury X, R9 Nano, or newer graphics cards
    • You received the following message in Camtasia: HEVC decoding component is not installed. If you know your video has the H265/HEVC codec and you know it does not play natively within other media players (Movies & TV or VLC Media Player for example), try downloading and installing the HEVC Codec from Microsoft. After installing, restart the computer and see if you can import the file.
  • Any ISO6 encoded video files are not supported at this time.
  • If the above does not work or does not apply, you can convert some video formats to a friendly MP4 file format Camtasia can work with. Download Handbrake and watch the tutorial below to learn how to convert the file to MP4.

  • Another option is to open the file in a desktop media player or web browser and record the playback with Camtasia Recorder. The TREC recording file opens in Camtasia and can be imported into other projects.
