Problem
When trying to use Grab Text, Grab text fails or an error message pops up. Other issues may include Edit Text or Smart Redact not working as intended.
Solution
Starting May 1st, 2026 due to the expiration of the 3rd Party OCR License the Snagit team released updates that contained an updated license to allow continued functionality around Grab Text and other OCR features. Grab Text, Edit Text, and Smart Redact functions within Snagit will not work without the update containing the refreshed license. If you are on a version of Snagit older than the versions below you will want to update your software to apply this fix. The following Snagit versions contain the updated license information:
- Snagit 2026.1.1 & later
- Snagit 2025.4.2 & later
- Snagit 2024.3.7 & later
Snagit 2023 and older will not be receiving updates as they are out of engineering support.
Option 1: Download and install the latest version of Snagit 2024, 2025, or 2026.
You will want to navigate up to Help> Check for Updates>Install Updates, alternatively you can download and manually install the update below. If you do not see the option to check for updates in your help dropdown, this could be due to a configuration deployed by your IT Administrator, you will want to contact that team to update the software.
(Please note, the MSI Installers are intended for Enterprise Deployment use only. If you are on a personal machine not managed by an IT Admin team, you will want to use the .EXE installer)
For the latest current versions of Snagit 2026 you can find the downloads here EXE, MSI
For previous versions you can find both the EXE and MSI installers at our Downloads Page
Option 2: Turn on Experimental Feature for Optimized OCR functionality. (Snagit 2026 & later Only)
- Open up the Snagit Editor
- Navigate up to Edit> Editor Preferences>Experiments Tab
- You will need to check on the box for "I agree to Experimental Feature Terms" and click Agree
- In the next window the experiment options will be visible here
- Check on the box for Optimized OCR and then click OK
(If you do not see this option, or the option is greyed out, that would indicate that the experimental functions or usage data was disabled by your Administrator team)
