    Update 3 (May 13th, 2021):

    Hi Camtasia users,

Thank you for you patience. As of today Camtasia 2021.0.1 and Camtasia 2020.0.19 have been released and natively support both Intel and M1. Enjoy all of the performance improvements, and let us know if you run into any issues.

More info can be found here: https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053260571-Camtasia-and-Apple-Silicon-Compatibility-Info

    Thanks again,
    Rory

This is quite disappointing.  It would have been fine to read, "We have been working on removing the Intel dependences since June, when Apple first announced M1." It also sounds like you are at the mercy of other companies that aren't on top of things either.  Maybe take a page from Apple's book and break those dependencies so you can continue to release updates to improve the Camtasia product, or get left behind.

I am using it on M1 though via Rosetta. Probably I am not using the parts that require the incompatible libraries. Export is relatively slow compared to PC but I suppose that is expected.

gbaeke You are able to use Camtasia on an Apple Silicon device? Which version of Camtasia are you using? Also which Apple Silicon device are you using, and on what version of Big Sur?

We are working on expanding our access to Apple Silicon devices, but are limited currently.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

    Sure,

MacBook Air with Apple Silicon (M1 2020, 8GB)

Big Sur 11.0.1 (but worked on 11.0.0 as well)

    Camtasia 2020.0.10 (113374)

I am doing screen recordings, with webcam + external USB microphone. Simple editing with transitions, annotations, etc...

Export to MP4 as well but is significantly slower than on PC.

    Regards

I opened Camtasia on a base MacBook Air M1.  I opened an existing simple Camtasia project that had a 20 min video in it.  I exported it to an MP4 at a lower resolution, to time how long it took.  It was super slow (I did the same export on my high end 2016 MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB memory and discrete GPU with 4 MB of video memory.  It took ~ 3 minutes on the older 15" vs. ~ 18 minutes on the M1 MacBook Air.  Didn't crash though.)

I am waiting anxiously for a version of Camtasia that will run natively on Apple Silicon.

Just want to add my voice about needing Apple Silicon support for both Camtasia and Snagit. I hope TechSmith can commit some resources to make this happen as soon as possible.

Please invest resources in getting Camtasia to work natively on Apple M1 machines. They will only become more prevalent. Thanks.

+1, Camtasia 2020 so far works for me on Mac Mini M1 (16Gb), however, I do prefer to have native support ASAP.

  • Jeremy LIU

viacheslav, do you notice any performance issues on Mac Mini M1? Do you experience slow export as other users did?

    1
  • viacheslav

Jeremy LIU yep, exporting is VERY slow, even though according to Activity Monitor one of exporting processes using 100+% CPU and even 20+% GPU

I am also eagerly waiting for Native Camtasia support for Mac's M1 chip. Check out this video to see what I'm talking about: https://youtu.be/OuF9weSkS68?t=915

    Intel's 125 watts CPU < (LOSSES To) Apple's 5 watt CPU

Very disapppointing :-(. If Camtasia doesn't add M1 support (at top quality), this will be the final nail in the coffin for me to switch to another program. The constant crashes were bad enough already...

I simply want to chime in - video capture and editing within budget and power per watt is one of my primary reasons for wanting to switch over so I'll need to go to another program if it's not native.

UPDATE -post, but now all seems to be working well. I re-recorded video @ 1080p both with PnP and without. There were no stuttering or audio sync issues. This is with no new update to the software, so the other issue must have been a fluke. I rendered a 1080p 1:8 min video in about 18 minutes. I also did other activities while rendering and it didn't slow me down or cause issues. So, while I'm still looking forward to Techsmith updating for the M1 chip, it's livable now under Rosetta 2.

I just purchased my M1 Mac Mini.  Camtasia runs quite well on it thus far, but not the export.  It is taking 3-5 times as long as the video is to export. I haven't gotten through an export yet. Please get this fixed soonest. I am deeply frustrated, as this is what I do for a living, and Camtasia is my goto tool at this time.

Hope Camtasia can get this done ASAP....it should be on the first priority

    Yes, waiting for it eagerly.

Same experience as others.  Export speed is dire, but everything else seems fine.  Its not unusable on M1 (MacBook Pro in my case), but I am downing far too much coffee waiting for exports to complete!

  • olivier.melkal

    Same experience.

    - MacBook Pro M1
    - Big Sur 11.0.1
    - Camtasia 2020.0.12

it works (save screen, add annotations, transitions), but the export is extremely slow. We must quickly fix this problem.

Unfortunately, the only response from tech support on the issue was to read this forum thread.  What we need is a timescale.

I'd like to agree with the above comments, export is so slow, almost unusable.

Please Techsmith team, start supporting h.265 codec  - which is built-in in the new M1 chip

I am actively looking to invest on a new tool for screen recording on my new MacBook Pro M1, and I really hope Camtasia comes out with it quicker or at least with a more precise release date (native M1 build) which will help me take a decision to 'wait for it'. Of course I am an existing customer and prefer to use the same tool, but cannot wait indefinitely.

I am watching this tread closely and hoping for an update ASAP. Video editing is a major part of my business and I've relied on Camtasia for years. My experience with Camtasia on M1 is terrible. During editing, the video is choppy/dropping frames constantly and I'm only editing for 720p and 1080p. Exporting is a joke. It sometimes succeeds but I've had the export appear to succeed only to find the last 1/2 of the video blank. I really like using Camtasia because it's not complicated and my assistants can use the templates I've created to quickly edit video, but we'll have to move to Final Cut Pro if this isn't resolved quickly.

Another frustration is that I haven't had any trouble with any of my other apps that have to use Rosetta 2. Camtasia is the only one. Hoping for a fixed update fast! 🤞🏼

I am faced with a New Mac Mini M1 16 GB and cannot record the system audio on either Camtasia 2020 or Snagit 2021. I was told by tech support this MIGHT be remedied by the beginning of 2021. It is now the middle of December 2020. Needless to say, this is very disconcerting. I have been using both of these products for a number of years and feel very let down by TechSmith, especially since I just recently purchased the Camtasia upgrade to 2020 and for Snagit 2021 without any warning that these products would NOT work properly with the new Apple M1 chip.

We don’t seem to be getting much response on this issue so at the advice of a friend I downloaded the free edition of DaVinci Resolve.  Certainly a lot more to get used to, but once you find where the Render button is it works fine on Apple Silicon.  Converted a 90 minute webinar to a mp4 for publishing to our LMS in 16 minutes where it was taking 8 hours with Camtasia.  Will stay with DaVinci whilst TechSmith get this sorted out.

    Hi All;

While I wish I could offer more information, at this time we still don't have an update beyond Rory's mention of early 2021. Once we have more information, an update will be posted to this thread.

Bonjour, pour moi j'ai Camtasia 2019 avec un Mac Mini M1 16 Go de RAM et ça marche très bien, bien mieux que sur un mac Intel même pour l'export ça va plus vite.

It will be great to have this support early 2021, as Camtasia is my only tool for years and wanting to see Camtasia running faster in M1 will be great bless, please make it possible sooner !

    Thanks,

PLEASE HELP, is there anyway to get system audio to record on M1 MacBook pros? Can anyone verify that it is working for them, tried many things and still have no solution to fixing the problem.
