Create Source Graphics for Future Editing in Snagit Editor

Problem

After I save an image as a PNG or JPEG, when I come back to the image I am no longer able to edit the object that I have drawn on the image.

Solution

When an image is shared or saved as a shareable format like a PNG or JPEG, then that image is flattened. This means that all of the objects on the image become a part of the image itself, and will not be editable again. If you know you will need to come back to a specific image to make adjustments, save a copy of the image as a .SNAG or .SNAGX file

The SNAG/SNAGX file format saves the current state of an image and allows for editing of any vector-based objects on the canvas such as text, callouts, stamps, shapes, and pasted images. Use this file format to incorporate feedback, make edits or revisions, and update the image at any time.

The SNAG file format can only be opened in Snagit on Windows.

Save an Image as a .SNAG or .SNAGX File

  1. In Snagit Editor, click to select the image in the tray.
  2. Select File > Save As.
  3. Select SNAG or SNAGX from the Save as type dropdown.
  4. Click Save.

About Vector Graphics

If you save an image containing vector objects to another file format, the objects flatten to become a permanent part of the image.

Flatten Objects on the Canvas

  • Right-click the object on the canvas and select Flatten or press CTRL+T.
  • Right-click on an object on the canvas and select Flatten All or press CTRL+SHIFT+T
