Videos Are Blurry When Recorded in Snagit

Problem

Produced videos in Snagit are blurry when played back.

Solution

This behavior occurs when the video cannot play back at the same size it was recorded.

Reason 1: Video Is Blurry in the Snagit Editor

If the video that was recorded is a large video (the selected recording area was large or in full screen), then the video may not be able to fit in the Editor without needing to be shrunk down. In this case, the video is just zoomed. Save the video by selecting File > Save As. Then, view the MP4 in your default media player at its original size.

Reason 2: Video Is Blurry in YouTube/Vimeo

Platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo re-encode all videos to be set in the 16:9 widescreen format. So if the original recording was not in this format, it will be scaled. When a video is scaled, this causes it to loose quality.

  • Instead of recording in full screen, record a 1280x720 or 1920x1080 of the screen. This way, the video will fit inside of YouTube/Vimeo without needing to be resized.
  • Make sure the video player is set to be played back in HD. This is usually a gear icon in the bottom right corner of the video once it is on YouTube/Vimeo.

Reason 3: Video Is Blurry When Playing Back Through a Third-Party Media Player

If the player is resizing the playback of the video, it may cause this to look blurry. Make sure the video is playing back at 100% of its original size.
