Here's two videos of the process below, we recommend reading the steps before watching these videos:

  1. In Camtasia click Share > Local File > Custom Production Settings > MP4 - Smart Player (HTML5).
  2. Select Closed Captions under the Options tab.

Step 2: Open up Production Caption Data

  1. Browse to the folder where Camtasia produced the video.
  2. Locate the file named [production name]_config.xml. Where [production name] is the name you gave to your video.
  3. Open the file in a Notepad or another text editor that can edit XML.

    Tip!

Notepad++ is free and works great for tasks like this.

  4. The XML produced by Camtasia is not formatted in a readable way by default. To make the XML more readable do the following:
    1. Copy all the text in the file.
    2. Open this link to an online XML formatter in a browser.
    3. Paste content in text area and click FORMAT XML.
    4. Copy formatted XML text and replace text in the opened file in the text editor.
    5. Save file.

Step 3: Adding New Captions

  1. Locate the caption section of the XML document.

  4. At the bottom of this article is a list of supported language codes. Do not modify the markup (\rtf1) surrounding the caption text. It is used for formatting the text.
  5. Save file.

Step 4: Modify Player HTML File

  1. Open (production name)_player.html in a text editor.
  2. Locate and delete the following line: <script src="scripts/config_xml.js"></script>
  3. Save file.

You will not be able to preview the production from your desktop with this change.  But it will work when you upload the production to your hosting server.

Step 5: Upload the Production Folder to Your Hosting Server

  1. The TechSmith Smart Player will auto-detect the languages you have supplied in the XML.
  2. Users will be given an option to switch between language tracks at anytime during playbackimage-4-updated.png
