Snagit Capture is Washed Out With HDR

Problem

When I turn on HDR in Windows my Snagit captures appear washed out.

If you're experiencing issues with the captured image appearing darker than the original image in Snagit 2024, please see this article: https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/29263135447693-Snagit-2024-2-0-Captures-Darker-Than-Original-Image

Solution

We are always working to improve the quality of captures when HDR is turned on. We have implemented HDR support in Snagit 2024 and later. Please update to the latest version of Snagit to ensure that HDR monitors are supported.

Experminental Feature: Snagit 2025.4.0 and later

If you are still seeing issues with HDR captures and have Snagit 2025.4.0 or later, we have also implemented a new experimental feature within the software that may further improve this experience. Please see the process below that covers how to enable this feature.

Navigate to Edit > Editor Preferences > Experiments

  • Click to Agree to Experimental Feature Terms.
  • Check on HDR CAPTURE FIDELITY
  • Click Ok to exit from Settings.
  • Restart Snagit and the Snagit Editor.
  • Try a new capture with this setting enabled

If you have an older version of Snagit instead, we recommend turning HDR off in the Windows settings:

Windows 10

  1. Select the Start button, then select Settings > System > Display .
  2. If you have multiple displays connected to your PC, choose the HDR-capable display under Rearrange your displays.
  3. Select Windows HD Color settings.
  4. Under Display capabilities, check to make sure it says No next to Use HDR.

Windows 11

  1. Select the Start button, then enter settings. Select Settings > System > Display.
  2. If you have multiple displays connected to your PC, choose the HDR-capable display at the top and then click HDR.
  3. Turn off HDR.
