Record Video with TechSmith Capture

Quickly record anything on your screen with the TechSmith Capture video recorder.


Record a Video

  1. Sign into Screencast. Click the Launch Recorder button.

  2. The launch website opens. If a prompt appears, allow your computer to open the application. If you are unable to launch TechSmith Capture, click the Download and Install link.

  3. The Capture dialog appears. Click the Capture button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Command+Shift+1 (Mac).

  4. The orange crosshairs appear. Click and drag to select an area to record or click Fullscreen to capture the entire screen.
  5. The capture toolbar appears. Click the Video Capture button.

  6. The video recording toolbar appears. Select the recording settings:

    • Webcam: Record video from a built-in or connected camera device. Click the dropdown to select the camera device and the webcam display settings:

      • Picture-in-Picture: The webcam displays as a small video in the lower-right corner of your video.
      • Fullscreen Webcam: The webcam fills the entire video display area. Screen video is not recorded when the Fullscreen Webcam option is enabled.

      The webcam display settings (Picture-in-Picture or Fullscreen Webcam) cannot be changed during recording.

    • Microphone Audio: Record the audio from your computer's built-in microphone or from a connected USB microphone. Select an audio recording device from the microphone dropdown.

    • System Audio: Record the sound from your computer such as application alerts or the audio playing from your computer speakers.

    • To adjust the size of the selection, drag the handles or type custom dimensions in pixels into the Width and Height fields and press Enter.

    • To move the selected area on the screen, click and drag the selection to the desired location.

  7. To start recording, click the Record button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Shift+Command+1 (Mac).

    The recording toolbar appears. If recording the entire screen, a smaller toolbar appears in the lower-right corner of the screen..

  8. During recording, you can: 
    • Click the Webcam button to toggle on/off. If recording Fullscreen Webcam, this toggles between recording webcam and screen video.

    • Click the Microphone or System Audio buttons to toggle on/off.

    • To pause recording, click the Pause button.

    • To restart the recording, click the Start Over button. If you select this option, the recording is permanently deleted.

    • To cancel the recording, click the Cancel button. If you select this option, the recording is permanently deleted.

  9. To stop the recording, click the Stop button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Shift+Command+1 (Mac).

  10. The Video Preview dialog appears. Click the Upload to Screencast button to upload your content to Screencast.com. If you click Cancel, the recording is permanently deleted.

 

Tip for Windows Users

For quick access, you can add TechSmith Capture to your taskbar.

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Browse to TechSmith Capture in Apps.
  3. Right-click the TechSmith Capture option and select More > Pin to taskbar. SC2020-PinCaptureAppInOS.png
