Problem
A scrolling capture using Snagit on macOS does not capture the content correctly, or the following error message is displayed: Scrolling Capture Failed.
Solution
Mac Mail
Scrolling arrows only show when hovering over the subject information. As soon as you move the cursor over the body of the email, the arrows disappear.
Use the hotkeys to take a scrolling capture of the message.
X - scroll diagonally
D - scroll down
R - scroll across
- Start a capture.
- Hover the cross hairs over the email message so that the yellow scrolling arrow is visible.
- Press one of the keys mentioned above to take the scrolling capture.
Google Chrome (v68+)
Google Chrome 68 and later introduces a change which prevents JavaScript from executing through AppleScript. This is what Snagit uses to take scrolling captures. To fix the problem, follow these steps:
- Open Google Chrome.
- From the menu bar, click View > Developer > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events.
- Try the scrolling capture again.
Apple App Store
The scrolling arrows do not appear when using Apple's App Store version of Snagit. See this article for more information. If the Apple's App Store version of Snagit is not being used and the arrows do not appear, make sure that the scrolling is enabled in Snagit. See this article for more information.
Panoramic Scroll
Snagit (Mac) 4 and later introduces a new way of capturing content that extends beyond what is visible on your screen - panoramic capture. If the auto-scroll method is failing or producing undesirable results, try panoramic capture.
How To: Panoramic Scrolling Capture
Panoramic scrolling capture may have trouble accurately capturing parralax websites.
Web Capture
In Snagit (Mac), an alternative of capturing a web page is using the web capture method. See this article to use the web capture method.
Web capture can only work with HTTP sites, not HTTPS sites.
Use a Different Browser
When capturing content from a web browser, view the same web page in a different browser. We recommend using:
- Google Chrome
- Mozilla Firefox
- Apple Safari
Each browser displays a specific page in a slightly different way even though it may appear the same on the screen, so some browsers may show better results than others for specific pages.
Go Incognito
Most browsers have the ability to browse in incognito or private window. These alternate browsing modes usually disable all third party extensions and add-ons, which can potentially interfere with Snagit's scrolling ability.
Check Zoom
Scrolling capture will work best with whatever application is being captured on and is set to the 100% zoom level default.
Rule out Security Software
Security software and Identity Protection software is always adapting and changing on a daily basis. Unfortunately, it can sometimes falsely detect Snagit (or any trusted application) as a potential threat and block the software from working properly. Rule out security software as a potential conflict by disabling the security software completely while running a quick test with Snagit.
If the scrolling capture does work when disabling the security software, contact the security software manufacturer for instructions on adding Snagit to the exclusions list (sometimes referred to as the white list).
