Camtasia Crashes on Export

There can be many causes for Camtasia crashing during the export phase that range from complex projects to out of date drivers. We've collected a few steps that can help if Camtasia crashes on export, which you can find below:

Update Camtasia

Update Video Drivers

  • Some computer manufacturers, such as Dell, Lenovo, HP, and others, will maintain their own drivers so you may need to check your computer manufacturer's support site first.
    • We recommend using the tools linked above for each manufacturer to automatically scan your system for updated drivers.
    • Additionally, some individual hardware manufacturers utilize their own tools to manage the drivers; ex. nVidia's GeForce Experience and AMD's Adrenaline Software suite.
    • Administrative rights may be required to update your audio and video drivers, please reach out to your IT team before trying to update your drivers.
    • Restart the computer once any drivers have been updated (required).

Check File Name

  • Check the file name and path
    • Ensure there are no special characters (not-limited-to periods, commas, exclamation points, etc.)
    • Ensure you're not exporting to a cloud (OneDrive, Dropbox), network, or external hard drive
    • Try exporting to your Desktop to make sure the file path is not too long

Try the Microsoft Basic Renderer

  • Set Camtasia to use the Microsoft Basic Renderer
    1. In Camtasia go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced.
    2. In the Hardware Acceleration section, set the drop down to Microsoft Basic Render Driver and click Ok.
    3. Restart Camtasia (required)
    4. Attempt to reproduce the project.

Additional Considerations

  • Try highlighting the first half of the project and right-clicking on it and exporting; once complete, try exporting the second half by selecting it.
    • If successful, import both halves into a new project, add them to the timeline in the appropriate order and export once more.
  • If the crash happens with all projects, look for common denominators:
    • Are they stored in the same location? If so, try saving/moving the project to a different directory.
    • Are they using a common asset/piece of media? If you add just that piece to a new project and save it, do you have the same issue? If you remove the asset/piece of media, does Camtasia still crash on export?
    • Is it crashing at the same percentage during export? If so, check that area of the timeline for common assets as mentioned above.
