Deploying TechSmith Products

Supported technologies for deploying and managing Snagit, Camtasia, and Audiate in your enterprise environment

TechSmith software is used in every company in the Fortune 500, along with hundreds of thousands of organizations of every size worldwide. Our aspiration is for TechSmith apps to be the easiest desktop apps IT admins manage.

Snagit has the broadest deployment within organizations, so we have invested most heavily over many years in enterprise management capabilities for that app. But we’ve also applied what we’ve learned and built to make Camtasia Editor and Camtasia Audiate easy to manage at scale, as well.

Endpoint system requirements

Snagit, Camtasia Editor, and Audiate are desktop-installed (“on-prem”) applications that run on Windows and MacOS devices.

As a powerful, non-linear video editor, Camtasia Editor has more demanding system requirements…while Snagit and Audiate require less on-device horsepower. Snagit has the strongest support for desktop virtualization.

Connectivity requirements

As subscription software, all TechSmith applications require access to the internet for license activation and at least every 90 days to verify current license status

Connectivity is also required for a growing number of cloud-powered product features and optional, integrated web applications. Auto-updates are delivered via internet connection.

User accounts are required for Audiate and web applications but not for Snagit (Business license) or Camtasia Editor (Business license). SSO/SCIM is on our roadmap; input and pilot partners are welcome.

To support a broad range of enterprise environments, we’ve developed options to restrict connectivity while minimizing degradation of the end-user experience. Snagit and Camtasia Editor can be configured and used in a way that requires little or (in limited cases) no connectivity. Audiate requires constant connectivity to deliver its core functions.

Configuration and packaging options

TechSmith maintains a downloadable, deployment preparation tool that provides Microsoft Windows admins deep application configuration options via an approachable, checkbox interface.

The tool accepts the Snagit or Camtasia Editor .msi (Windows installer) file as an input and generates .mst and .bat files with your custom settings. During deployment, the .mst file is applied to the base .msi file, ensuring a standardized, pre-configured installation across all Windows desktop endpoints.

Use the deployment preparation tool to:

  • Package a multi-user software key with the application installer (commonly used to automate provisioning in response to helpdesk or software center requests)
  • Standardize on-device file storage locations (e.g., Snagit capture library)
  • Customize default, allowed, and disallowed features (e.g., cloud-connected experiences)
  • Preload branded assets, themes, and styles

A growing number of configuration and packaging options are also available for MacOS: Snagit | Camtasia Editor

Deployment and patch management

Automate deployment, patching, and inventory management for Snagit and Camtasia Editor on Windows endpoints, using industry-standard tools. These tools accept the customized .mst and .bat files generated by TechSmith’s deployment prep tool.
